Started following the 718 news after going to the dealer 2 months back looking for a cayman and was told they stopped production with the new model expected to announce in Jan and hit the road in April.
Pretty big changes for a "mid-cycle" makeover.
- going from a NA 6 cylinders to a 2L/2.5L 4 cylinder turbo. (about 10% increase in HP)
- New LED headlights/taillights and new front & rear bumper.
- Articles said some upgrades to the interior but I couldn't see any difference beside the option for a GT Steering wheel.
- Bigger brakes
- My sales rep said they should have Apple Carplay on the new model (which is something I really want since you don't have to fork out 5K for porsche's own infotainment/navigation package, which probably won't work as well an iphone)
The turbo 4 cylinder changes seem to get a lot of hate and skepticism tho...
Wonder what would happen if you slapped on a UEL header....
but then again Subaru would probably be insulted.

Man, Porsche designers are very........... Lazy? Look at the difference between the last fen corolla and the new one. Huge change! Then compare the last gen of, well, any Porsche to the current one.
Have to say I like a lot of things Porsche has been doing but these 4 small lights in the corners of the headlight housing...I dunno, not my thing. Looks out of place.

But that's just my opinion...
lol comparing corolla to Porsche... sorry, just had to
They deliberately keep the Porsche "look" to appeal to purists and define their brand. I don't think there is any laziness behind it.

I fully understand the ridiculous nature of my comparison. But as I lay in bed it's the best I could come up with. Why not compare it to corvettes then. Each c4/5/6/7 retain a similar shape, yet feel very different to each other. Guess I just don't 'understand the brand' for Porsche
Since the cayman was released its had some major changes done.
They dont really need to do full refreshes like corollas/civics of the world because they dont really need to sell the car every few years. Its gonna sell without a refresh or not.
My AFC gave me an ABS CEL code of LOL while at WOT!

Not lazy at all, in fact, I would argue they are probably twice as hard working as the corolla designer. It's not easy working with the ever changing industry safety standards while maintaining very similar design and profile generation after generation and still making the marque look modern. Not to mention how most of the time with design, you add something but takes away from somewhere else. Very fine balancing act.
Corolla and economy boxes just scrap everything that was done before and just start with a blank slate and take design cues from everywhere else without ever having to consider what looks they have to maintain to preserve its DNA: Cheap appeal to the masses. Econo-boxes simply got bigger to accommodate more safety shit and growing bodies so that they can go with industry standards. Then they had to add sub-economy boxes in like the Yaris to make the Corolla higher class.
It takes much more thought into designing a new Porsche to have brand recognition. When someone is paying that coin for a Porsche, no one better confuse it with a Kia.
Even the WRX STi, in my opinion looks like a freakin' civic from the side.
Bottom line: When people look at a Porsche they're likely to not have to question what it is. Shiny? Porsche profile? Very familiar but something looks different? Probably a new Porsche.
When someone looks at a new Corolla: Is that a Camry? Or a Hyundai?

From a branding perspective it's actually must smarter for them to keep the original designs as close as possible. When people think of Porsche they think of that classic sleek sexy design and that is why they must keep that brand image. With the Corolla they are able to change and rebrand the car every few years because they have to do so in order to catch up to the competition. The only things that they really keep the same are the fact that Corollas are very safe, efficient and reliable, which is what everyone knows them for. Two very different cars that live in very different realms.
I completely understand where you're coming from, but myself and I'm sure a lot of other people too would be completely devastated if they revamped the classic Porsche design like Honda revamped the S2000 or Toyota revamped the Corolla.
Having recently hooned around in my cousin's 6cyl base Cayman, I can fully attest to how amazing these cars are in every single way, particularly that motor. Not sure if any turbo 4 will ever have the same feel or sound as a pure NA.

While I agree when you see a Porsche, you immediately know it's a Porsche, differentiating between models is another challenge unless you know your Porsches.
But there are always worse brands in this regard, such as Aston Martin. I would be totally lost if I can't spot the badge in the back.
