Options for old Honda that cost more to fix than worth?

So my family has an old 2003 Honda Odyseey with 250k on it. It drives fairly good with recent tuneup, tires and brakes but just developed some tranny problem. So the question is if I just want to get rid of it what are the options? I was thinking either fix it first then trade it in for a newer car. or sell to someone who would scrap it for parts without fixing it? Or does dealers take broken cars for trade in?

if it drives fine, trade it in at a dealership and take what you can get. otherwise its probably scrap value

If I was in your shoes (this seems to be a common trend given my last post)... and my folks were looking to upgrade then I'd say take it to the dealer (without fixing) for an estimate given the current problems (friend did this with his molested f350 from fort st john when he bought his WRX last month) and the dealership will decide whether its worth it for them to deal with or not. The worst thing the dealer can say is "No". If they say no then proceed with selling it as it is. I would not bother fixing the transmission since doing so you'd be excluding a group of people who'd be happy with the car even with the transmission problems - just be up front about it. Fixing the transmission and people throwing you the same offers that they would with a botched transmission would probably be the worst scenario.

K so the shop confirmed its tranny problem. Looking to scrap the car. Should I call one of those car scrap place or should I post it on craiglist as a car with tranny problem?

see how much junk yard will give you the car for and see how much the dealer would give you the car for (if trading in)

you can probably swap in a used one for 1500ish - that may be a good alternative but it would depend on luck to see what condition that transmission is in.

250k it's had a good run, I personally would scrap or trade it in.

If the car is still kinda drivable, this might be an option
https://scrapit.ca/

I used this like 5 years ago, their rule back then was the car needed to be able to drive to their scrap yard on it's own power. Not sure if that's still the case now.

250k is not even a lot. Is that common on the Odyssey?

Honda V6 always had tranny problems. Once it passes 100k, it's usually a ticking time bomb.

What kind of vehicle are you planning on purchasing? Some manufacturers do a push pull or drag event depending on time of year and will give you money with the only condition of it having to be insured for the past 3 months. My dealership does this in the spring and pays $1,000-$3,500 depending on what you purchase. I know Hyundai in Langley also has this going on right now cuz I drive by their large forklift holding up a beater van on the side of the bypass haha

My cousin just replaced his tranny on his odyssey. I believe it was 1700 bucks for a remanufactured tranny installed. If the car is in generally good shape, I wouldn't scrap it. Sell it to someone on craigslist who will replace the tranny and keep it or sell it.

so glad i pushed my parents towards the sienna back in 01. thing has been great to us, currently has 320k km on it with all original engine components. haven't done anything to it besides normal maintenance.

those damn v6 auto trans from honda are such a nightmare for most people. its best to stay away from cars that were equipped with that trans. my 03 tl had to get the first trans replaced at 80k km and i kept the car for another couple of years after that but got rid of it because i knew it would cause me nothing but grief in the future.

Yeah car broke down in seattle. had to get it towed for 250km. Thankfully I had BCAA Premier membership.

So today I sold the car for $750 to a guy on craigslist. He is coming to pick it up tomorrow morning.

Went and bought a new Dodge Caravan. Only $23k for a new Van didn't feel the premium for Honda or Toyota was worth it when its just going to be used mostly for moving things.

Chrysler Pacifica

Looks sweet but wont be out for few more months and we need a van now. Plus first year model are usually less reliable so buying last year Caravan is probably a better investment in the long run.

worried that resale value will tank when the new one comes out

He bought a brand new Chrysler... he is clearly not worried about resale value.
