Brake Dust on Wheels

How would I clear off this caked off brake dust on my Matte Black wheels? I've used wash and wax and it still doesn't come off. Would a acid based cleaner ruin the finish?

Try a non-acidic wheel cleaner first.

Yeap, it's really caked on. Tried scratching it off with a fingernail too and it wont come off either. It's really gritty.

Sonax wheel cleaner works well. I use it often. It will break down the iron in the deposits you have and help lift them off. You can tell its working because it turns a very deep purple colour and sprays on bright green.

jtong? is that you?

You'll want to take precaution when working on Matte wheels as their finish is more delicate. What products and techniques have you tried?

iron x should get rid of that...
I use it on my Z51 C7 and Truck

I've tried using Meguair's Hot Wheels Cleaner in the blue bottle for wheels with delicate finishes. Then followed it up with a claybar and it didn't even make the slightest difference. I'll give Sonax and Iron-x a shot, both have respectable reviews.

If you're going to give Iron-X a shot you might as well just get Iron Off from Alex @ WaxedShine in Coquitlam. Same concept with the color change etc but a lot cheaper and you don't have to pay for shipping or wait a week to receive it.

I bought a truck, and I don't think the wheels had been cleaned in ages. There was baked on brake dust, I could not remove. I came across this on youtube and was shocked at how well it work.

i sprayed Super Clean on the rims and the dust would not come off, then I used a credit card and shocked. As I rubbed the CC the rim surface was getting smoother and removing the brake dust, took about 2 hours to do all 4 wheels and was shocked at well it worked.

Im in the same boat, brake dust is really caked on. It will only come off when i scratch it with my fingernail.

Using a brush with meguires wheel cleaner did nothing.

Can i get any of those products(sonax and iron x) listed above locally?

Having this issue on my truck wheels in the same spot, even iron x didn't make a dent on it. Going to try and get some Meguiars Wheel Brightener somehow, apparently if that shit can't get it off nothing will.

I use Megs Wheel Brightener and it's slightly less effective than Sonax (but a lot cheaper). I bought a gallon jug of the stuff off Amazon a few years back and still using it to this day.

I don't know how delicate your wheels are but I've also read on a few forums that masonry cleaner (the stuff that cleans concrete off brickwork) does a pretty good job of cleaning off baked on brake dust. I probably wouldn't use this stuff on anything super fancy/expensive though just in case it damages the finish.
