Fence Painting

I have a untreated cedar fence that was installed in the winter of 2013. I need to get it painted, and have no time to do it myself.

Any recommendations? Looking for someone who can do a good job for a fair price (rather than a poor job for a cheap price).

Actually, should I be painting or staining? Currently it is bare wood.

I live in the Langara/Oakridge area. Standard sized lot, brick/iron fence in the front, and cedar fences along either side. I'm on a corner lot - anything special I should be aware of?

Thanks.

The quotes I received to paint my bare fence panels range from $1000-1200. My budget was about half that considering it's likely to be a day long job. I've been told material costs are expensive. Interested to see the responses to the thread

i'm thinking of staining my fence too. Does that quote include cleaning and prepping the wood before stain/paint.

What are the dimensions (H+L)? Both sides?

Factor in prep, materials and labour.

I did DIY.

firstly, the fencing was old and greyish due to age.

I went at it with a pressure washer to remove the layer of grime and restored it back to the original 'wood' finish.

let it dry for a few days.

then with a combo of roller brushes and regular brushes, went at it. it did take a few days but looks great. I went with a darker shade. so far it has held up quite well after more than 3yrs. that grayish color was hideous to look at.

PIX:

old, untreated, graying gross fence:

pressure washing the years of neglect off:

let it dry... love the pure wood color...:

look at the comparison between the neighbours ugly ass fence:

applied the paint:

Unfortunately, I don't have the time to do it myself.

But yes, my fence looks like that grey mess in your first pic!

Silly question, but did you paint both sides of the fence that's between you & your neighbour?

^^no. I only painted the side that was facing my property. the neighbour on the left painted it some different shade and the neighbour on the right hasn't done anything yet.

Any recommendations in terms of brand? I see Thompson's waterproofer in most places and I found Behr brand at home depot.

I just got some guys to do mine last week

Bought defy extreme cedartone from the states as the other offerings were either some Sherwin Williams or Benjamin Moore stuff from the painters around the same price.

Im going to go with a oil based one next time like cutek extreme
take a look at http://www.deckmagazine.com/design-c...t-the-sequel_o

Definitely DIY next time not paying some guy to spray shit everywhere ugh

I made the mistake of NOT letting my fence completely dry after pressure washing. some spots had a bit of moisture in the wood, so the stain came off after a year.

Anyways, I have no help for the OP, since I did it myself. fences are like the easiest thing to paint, especially if you don't have any lattice. Only takes 1 day to pressure wash, then 1 day to paint.

Little late here, but you can buy a sprayer kit from princess Auto for like 30$. Stained mine this past summer and it went great. So much faster than brushing.
Just need a compressor of course and long hose. You can buy a pad to push the stain in after each panel.
My fence is about 100ft total. Did both sides two coats. Took about four or five hours.
Just make sure to use the proper mask and keep your skin covered. And brush on anything that's within five feet of the house. Wipe off over spray right away. It comes off easy when it's wet.

And yes, make sure you do it at least two days after drying and allow two days to dry. So you really wanna do it in the middle of one dry week
