| New member introduction and a "what car should I buy?" thread
Hi RS’ers,
By way of an introduction I’m pretty new to revscene, I’ve been a BCSB’er for 8 years (under a different user name than here on RS) but BCSB is a bit of a ghost town lately, very few members active on BCSB nowadays, in contrast Revscene is lively and active.
My current garage:
• Porsche 911 C4S
• NA Miata (lightly modded)
• Volkswagen Westfalia (for summer adventures)
• GMC Acadia….….blecchhhhh!!!! (the wife’s car….)
• Aprilia RSV1000R
• Honda CBR929RR
So here’s my dilemma, I’m already on the hunt for a new winter car (just sold my last one) and I’m all over the map on what to get. I’m not going to wait till November to start looking, if I start now I have more time to snatch up the right deal when it pops up. This is one of my favorite parts of the car adventure the thrill of the chase!
Parameters:
• Budget $5,000-$8,000 but this is flexible by a couple of grand if a crazy deal comes up. I like 'em relatively cheap so that I'm not all precious about driving them in tough winter conditions
• Fun to drive, or an interesting car is preferred, Euro or Japanese is preferred
• Any drive config is OK (RWD, FWD, AWD), I’m under no illusions that one must have 4WD or AWD to drive in winter conditions, snowies on all 4 corners and you’re good to go.
• Manual transmission preferable but if the car was interesting enough I’d consider an automatic.
• I’m reasonably mechanically savvy and comfortable with modding my cars
• In order of preference: coupe, wagon, sedan
• No boring cars (no Corollas, Camrys, or Accords) and no SUV’s (exception….I’d consider an FX35 not sure why that one appeals when so many others don’t…) It probably shouldn’t be a convertible.
So what have I been looking at:
• Audi A4 or A6, I have a lot of experience with Audi’s (mostly very positive , I know that might put me in the minority)
• Acura RSX Type S, TSX, TL
• BMW 3 series
• Mini Cooper S (heard a lot of horror stories but for some reason they interest me…)
• Something JDM - (Subaru Impreza WRX STI, Legacy), Nissan Silvia/Skyline
• There’s a cheap Passat CC on the island, high km but a manual and a 2.0T motor that would be dirt cheap to mod to 260 hp.
• Saab 9-3 Aero
Anything else I should look at? Any thoughts? Any leads on interesting cars? As you can see from the list I’m looking at, I’m kinda all over the map, my tastes lean to euro or Japanese something domestic would need to be really different to get a look. I’m keeping tabs on the CL good buys thread.
There you go, that's me.

I'm a Subaru whore, and for good reason. They are a lot of fun with minor mods, and are a great choice for winter.
FX is a good choice too. They can be a little pricey to fix, but really, what isn't pricey to fix these days.

Plugging my own sale here, but I'm selling a 1997 Prelude with heated seats and remote start that fits your budget. Manual trans, comes with good winters on rims.

I was kind of looking at JDM Subaru WRX sti's. A lot of bang for the buck but I'd have to be willing to take the risk of the maintenance (and whether or not it was hooned to death) history being totally absent. Absent the risk of a spun bearing from it being compromised from prior abuse or running low on oil, I'd be pretty comfortable with one of those motors. I spent a winter with a JDM hdj80 Landcruiser, slow as mud and reinforced that I'm not really an SUV person. So I've done the RHD thing before, just not sure if I want anything too boyracer (I wouldn't rule it out but the rear wing can't be too gigantic), It would be good to have something that was reasonably quick but a bit stealthy. if you are really serious about getting a jdm subaru i would suggest going to the vancouver section of the nasioc message boards. plenty of people there who will steer you right... my memory is sketchy atm but i think there is someone there named alexinvancouver who is a rally driver and imports sti's and evo's on the side and from what i've read his cars are pretty honest drivers.

Well, the search is over. I did end up going over budget, I couldn't find anything under $10K that floated my boat.

Westfalia
Had I saw this thread ealier I would have recommended waiting a little bit until DC5R's started to flow into the country. Woulda been right around your price range and satisfied the import and RSX category on your list.
Looks like you found a sweet deal though. Those wheels scream Surrey haha.

The 335 will be a 2 year (3 years if I really like it) deal then on to something else. That should bring the DC5R into play for the next go round. Quote:
