Subwoofer question.

I decided to wire up a audio system last weekend. Picked up a set of Hertz 6.5" components for the front. A pair of Hertz 6.5" coaxial for the rear. All running off of head unit power. I also built a compact fiberglass sub box to fit in the side of my wagon. That's running off a Clarion APX 400.2 amp and a JL Audio 10" sub that I found lying around in my garage.

I find the sound quality satisfactory but I would like a bit more thump from the subwoofer. My question is: is it worth uptrading to a modern sub and/or amp. I think the ones I have now are from the 90's lol.

If I should upgrade, does anyone have any suggestions? The box has a volume of around 0.6 to 0.7 cu/ft and a maximum mounting depth of 4.5"

Thanks

If you can give the model number of the sub, I can tell you if the sub will work well or not in that box.

.6 cu/ft is pretty small. You need to factor in the fact the magnet of the woofer also. So .6 could really only be .4> cu/ft.

I would suggest trying stuff your box with this (Blackhole / High Efficiency Dampening Products) or polyfill from any local fabric store.

Like installerz asked, what model is the sub? And what type of vehicle is this? I don't think changing the subwoofer will make a huge impact given the fact you're limited in air space. Your amp is also a little on the weak side also. If I recall that amp should be about 200RMS or so bridged so not very much power.

If I recall correctly. It's an early model JL 10w0 4 ohm single voice coil. I was thinking of getting a pioneer or Kenwood shallow depth sub for under $200 if it would be an improvement over the one I have now.

The JL sub will want a larger enclosure than that to make nice sound. The Kenwood that you are looking at may be better with the amount of power that you have, depending on its sensitivity.

What model of head unit do you have?

Here is the manual for the sub, It will sound very good in the recommended enclosure. Nothing has really changed other then today cheap subs are cheap in quality.

No a fan of shallow subs either If you have the depth use a normal sub Stamped or cast.

It's a JVC KW-V30BT. So basically I just have to find the most powerful sub that works in a 0.6ish cubic foot enclosure? It's 16"w x 12"h x 5"d plus a little extra space from the front protrusion. Basically looks like this:

I ended up getting a used Alpine slim mount Type-S (SWS-1043d) off of Craigslist and a Polk Audio PA D1000.1 from Visions. Man, what a night and day difference! Thanks for the audio advice guys!

So, let me get this straight....CMAN & I give you advice, then you go to visions instead of one of our stores? Hmmmm. I'm sensing less free advice given

lol Can't win em all. Sometimes our stores might just be a little too far out of the way or some people don't see value in service from independent stores.

I like your attitude Clarence. I just don't see a win here. He didn't even call us to see what we would recommend.
Instead, he went to a place that cares about their own wallet.
