Starting today, Vancouver Police officers will be listening for noise violators in the city.
Traffic officers will be out with decibel meters, conducting increased enforcement on noisy exhaust from cars and motorcycles.
Vancouver Police spokesman Cst. Brian Montague says they don’t write a lot of tickets for these types of offences, but they want to raise awareness about the adverse impact that the exhaust noise can have on city dwellers, especially the residents of the downtown core.
“The noise levels can be pretty debilitating for some residents especially in summer time when people have their windows open,” said Montague.
He says noise levels from some motorcycles and cars could reach an upwards of 105 decibels in some areas while the legal requirement is 91 decibels, and they have been dealing with a number of concerns.
Unnecessary noise from a vehicle’s engine, tires, brakes or exhaust is a violation that currently carries a fine of $109 and three points. But Montague says they hope they can avoid issuing tickets, and are letting those drivers with noisy vehicles know they will be looking out for them.
“A lot of it is education,” said Montague. “Just getting people aware that these can have some serious consequences especially in the West End. The noise tends to echo and almost increase as it gets bounced between the buildings, so it’s a significant concern for many of our residents.”
Montague says they also have the ability to write a fix-it ticket to violators, which provides the vehicle owner with a time frame during which they can fix the deficiency in their vehicle and avoid the fine.
I wonder how factory exhaust from sports/super cars will be dealt with.
For example, if a factory exhaust system for a Jaguar F-Type (and we know its a loud car) is acceptable by Transport Canada, then would it be given a pass?

So true.
Just the other day I spotted an Aventador and Aventador SV downtown and you could hear both from a few blocks away. Funny if they get pulled over and VPD tries to ticket them for having loud stock exhausts.

Exactly. I brought it up because my friend did get pulled over in an F-Type for a loud exhaust but the car was factory.

Can they start with those guys that rip their cruiser bikes around play grounds and residential neighborhoods? fucking christ, those guys hate hearing stuff. Must be soothing to hear that rather than their wives.

The local government can issue their own regulation however they want.
For example, the BC Ministry of Transportation says 50km/h statutory speed limit, however, if municipal government wants to regulate it to 40km/h, they can.
If Transport Canada (federal government) approves 105 decibels, the municipal or provincial government can still make their own regulations.
For example, "No vehicle shall emit more than 91 decibels in residence area after 10pm" or they can tell you "Vehicles with less than 5 inch ground clearance shall not enter this road"
This goes for Chinese license. I saw this news article here on RS a while ago, ICBC(provincial government) says people are allowed to drive with Chinese license, however RCMP(federal government) says you can't.

Even weirder is that when cruiser bikes are loud, no one really bats an eye, but when it's a sportbike, people are frothing at the mouth for the rider's head.

Sadly I think what would happen is you'd get a ticket, then have to fight it on your own dime and prove that it came that way.

Wherever I see someone complaining about a bike being loud its a Harley
Why don't they start enforcing the "keep right except to pass" rule on the highway instead of this. I think more of us have more issues with that rather than too loud exhausts.

I'm fucked. Because Ferodo. Truthfully though, I hate really loud cars unless it makes sense they are loud. Loud 550 hp v10? Awesome. Loud 9000 rpm redline? Cool. Loud FR-S/civic/3 series/Jetta? Just don't.
