Jumping Ropes So I was at the gym the other day trying to get into shape... Im not a huge fitness guy and I was on the treadmill. I do 10mins at a time coz im so out of shape and struggling.. haha... damn... Anyways some guy who was working out suggest that I get into jumping rope as its better then treadmill for cardio. So I did some searching online and read that it was. For anyone whos into Jumping Ropes can suggest a nice set for beginners thats not fairly expensive... Thanks |
This is a best seller on Amazon and is $16. https://www.amazon.ca/Skipping-Multi...ords=jump+rope |
I pretty much only do jump rope for cardio, great way to HIIT without getting bored on the treadmill. You can get a good beginner plastic rope at any Fitness Town (for example the one behind Steve Nash on Gilmore) $10 for a rope, if not less. |
Just to add, I don't usually recommend the one that was posted above for new comers. Those ropes carry a metal cable through the rope itself which can hurt the feet or legs if you're new to jumping rope, I'd always recommend a straight plastic thin rope to new comers (I prefer them myself in fact, and I've been skipping for quite some time). Cheers |
is jumping rope bad for someone with bad knees as it's creating impact on the knees by constantly jumping? just curious |

btw, when your jumping, its only an inch or so off the ground... |
It's a relatively low impact jump as your on your toes the whole time. Not like running where you land on your heel and shock your knees with each impact. Berz out. |
https://www.amazon.ca/JXULE-Plastic-...tic+speed+rope Definitely use a plastic before you move on to using the cable speed ropes. The little bit of weight with the plastic will help you with your rhythm. I have both and probably use my plastic one 90 percent of the time unless I'm trying to do a massive amount of double unders. |
Do you guys have any program or routine you don't mind sharing? It's getting cold and will be getting wet outside, so it will be great if I can replace jumping rope with running. I run around 5k every 2 days so it'll be great if there is a workout plan that can simulate similar level of intensity. |
you can do a mixture of balanced jumping with some squats, pushups and situps... with jump rope inbetween... |
To be honest rope the easiest training method to rope training is the way we would train for Boxing. I generally jump rope for 3 minute round increments, take your 60 second rest, and back at another 3 minutes. How many rounds is pretty much up to you, I try to keep my rope sessions to around 15-30 minutes, depending on how long I had weight trained prior. If you can't do 3 minutes at a time, than do 1.5 minutes per round, with 30 second rest between, etc. |

Speed Rope - Used for exactly that, speed, works well for double unders, or tricking, I'd say these should only be used by advanced skippers. Weighted Rope - Pretty much the opposite of the speed rope, the weighted rope has weights in the handles, which builds strength within the wrists and forearms, it basically makes your cardio more taxing on the body, sort of similar to wearing a weighted vest while doing cardio. I like weighted ropes, but I don't generally use them. Would not recommend a newbie to use these either though. "Regular" Rope - My staple, simple and efficient. You can trick with these the same way you can with the speed rope, great for beginners all the way to experts. I think these are the perfect ropes to have, fit well in any gym bag, small and versatile. |
Don't but the everest one at CDN tire, it's garbage, the plastic can easily break. The goodlife one is decent. I've got it down pretty decent but having a tough time with double unders. Skipping is incredibly addicting, when you get decent at it. |
I know using the jumping rope has many benefits. But can anyone tell me what will be the best time to do this exercise? Is there any specific time or I can do it whenever I want? |
If you're trying to get into shape or be not fat, then just do it anytime. The fact that you are doing it at all trumps any minuscule gain of timing it out. If you're already at 5% bf and an athlete, maybe try fasted in the morning to move more into a dense calorie burn, as over the night you use some of the carbs/glycogen in the body. That only makes a difference if you're diet is strict and on point, and relatively low carb. If you don't know that already, then just buy a $5 skip rope and just do em. |
