slightly off topic, but i believe the only 2 employers in vancouver who pay their employees vancouver living wage to start off is , Vancity Bank, and any City of Vancouver employee. someone please correct me if im wrong.

I used/still work for the City of Vancouver, and I can confirm the wage is $20.68 now. I also have a friend who works at Vancity, and he makes like $20~ an hour.

But sorry, I'm sick and tired of people treating Starbucks or equivalent as some kind of career type job. Personally knew too many people like this. Yeah, maybe if your ultimate goal is to climb up the chain in Starbucks Corp, but there are a bunch of people who legitimately settle at the shop making coffee and expect entitlement from it, while most people actually realize it's just a stepping stone job, or as you said, a part time job for extra cash on the side.

as a barista/shift, i do not believe you can make a living in vancouver. the last time i asked a manager how much they made was at least 5+ years ago. they had told me that if you are hired internally, you made less than when hired externally.

as a manager, you can probably make a living. even better if you get your bonuses.

On google it shows a store manager makes $47,434 on average , not sure if it includes bonuses or not. With that salary I think you can have it pretty good in Vancouver without a family? agree or not? let me know your opinions on this.

Offtopic... Vancity requires that employees from other businesses that go to their sites to do work are paid at least the living wage.

I think if I was younger, I would much rather work at a restaurant. You can make $50-100 in tips a night.

The thing is the groups that comes out with the figures are often supported by the unions.. so they are not exactly unbiased. Vancouver Living Wage.. you mind as well add a TM next to it, because it sounds great and all but it is not an official metric.

Much like Techron makes your car cleaner

In the end, if OP is sociable and willing to work, Starbucks is a perfectly acceptable job.

Maybe 5-7 years ago before average rent exploded, but not today and certainly, not going forward.

If average rent for a 1-bedroom apartment that is professionally managed is 1500 per month, that would represent nearly 40% of your after tax income just on rent. Ideally, you want to spend 25-30% of your after tax income on housing, particularly if you're renting your housing.

If you're content making 45-50K a year, you'll be far better off by working as a clerk for the provincial or federal government. At least you will get a defined benefit pension plan so your retirement savings will be taken care of for you.

if you're making 47k, which is not a terrible salary, you should probably look into renting for about $1000 in an older building. you'd be making some big sacrifices paying $1500 a month for sure...

buuuut that's for another thread

Let's face the reality here.. $20.68/hr sucks

Sure, it's not a bad wage for student but..

If you want to buy a house, get married, support your family, go on family vacation, send your kids to school, pay off insurance, mortgage, tax, whatever living expense, etc..

$20.68 is unrealistically low number.

Why would working at a Starbucks = fail? The op can be some 15 year old kid looking for his first job or someone looking for a second job to be able to live. Isn't that better than being a lazy ass kid who just lives off their parents?

Those who failed thy op are just retards. The guy is asking a legitimate question and trying to be proactive. Work is work and it's better to learn about financially responsibility and earn some money at Starbucks than staying at home doing shit all.

and yes, they are paid safeway wages because they are safeway hired employees.

i dunno which starbucks you applied to long time ago, but i started with minimum wage + 0.25 on top

i think starting wage now at starbucks is like 11.xx
safeway on number 1 road

noted, they almost paid $16 and it was 6? years ago..... or 5 cant remember lol

edit: i highly recommend every high school student with no job experience to apply to a union job at safeway, pay it just way too high compared to $10.45? at mcdonalds lol

doing a job that literally anyone can step in, get minor training, and do does not qualify somone to be able to buy/rent a nice place, as has been said these are entry level jobs, not somthing to build a life around.

I like you mentality.

I often hear people complaining about lack of jobs and unemployment.
I really don't think that's true. Most people just dont' want to do "certain" job. Everyone wants a job with "prestige" nowadays.

It is easy to hire an entry level accountant/programmer/financial analyst/etc with lots of education and pay him $30K/year.
Yet no on wants to be a plumber/electrician/trades man who makes $50-$100K+/year.

I was a shift supervisor at Starbucks 4-5 years ago, the experience really varies depending on which location you are at. If you are at a really busy store like Metrotown food court it's actually pretty fun and chill because they are willing to pay for employees. If you work at a relatively quiet store, they are very skimpy with coverage so be prepared to work a lot of overtime and 10-12 hour days to get shit done.

That being said, regardless of which level you are at there, I feel there are much easier jobs that pay better. I moved into sales (telecom) after leaving Starbucks and worked half as hard making twice as much as I did as a shift supervisor. No waking up at 4AM to get to work either. I would only really recommend Starbucks if you need a really flexible schedule to fill out your day. I used to work 5AM -1:30PM so I could squeeze in an 8 hour shift before my 2:30PM classes at SFU

i beg to differ. i say work at mcdonalds for like 3 years then quit and move onto something else. employers love seeing mcdonalds on your resume and the length you've endured with them. i landed 2 jobs paying over $20/hr because of mcdonalds.
