What weird/odd facts do you know? Automotive related

In this forum there's a bunch of know-it-all's lets see what we know.

Share any interesting facts that's cool about any car.

I'll start

Renault made a car called the Avantime, based on the Espace minivan the Avantime was the "cool/futuristic" car so it only sat 5 but the doors on them are very unique. The doors are long and wide but to be still be usable when parked next to a car, they were double hinged so people can get in or out easier.

Fairly well known fact but cool non the less.

In this day and age, side mirror blinkers are fairly common.

VW had something very similar on their early VW Beetles. Called Semaphores, small arms controlled by a push/pull solenoid operated these little buggers. The inter webs says they were equipped until 1961. I didn't think they were use that long, I thought it was only on the Split Window bugs.

Mustang is more girls' car than Miata.

Approx 50%(sometimes up to 60%) of Mustang buyers are female, whereas 25%-35% of Miata buyers are female.

Not to savage Subaru owners, but back in the 90's when they were struggling for sales against the other major brands, they found out that their cars were popular with buyers who were lesbians. Capitalizing on it, they started ad campaigns that boosted sales among them and cemented the brand outside the demographic itself.

In 1989, Mazda built a 4.0L W12 for their flagship Amati 1000, which never went into full production. It had an aluminum block, magnesium heads, ceramic cylinders and aluminum/ceramic valves.

When using the GM Tech II on a Saab 9-3 SS (I believe this works on 2003-2007 cars) if you go into the Airbag/SRS system submenu, there is a easter egg that allows the tech to play Pong on the Tech II.

- In terms of fatalities, the three safest vehicles in the world are the BMW 7 series, the Infiniti G35, and the 4th gen Toyota 4Runner. Circa 2007 anyways.

- Back in the 80's Toyota had a full-time development team in Kenya working on the Celica GTFour rally cars, as that was the toughest rally in the championship. So Sometimes I'll tell people my car was designed in Kenya

- In the WRC there was a requirement to have a restrictor of a certain diameter before the turbo in all the cars. In the 90's somebody at Toyota came up with a modified one with a hidden spring, that looked completely normal when the car was off or at low revs, but under high load part of the restrictor would pull back, allowing air around it. After the car did a bit too well in multiple rallies the officials seized the car, stripped it apart, and banned Toyota when they found the device.

- As part of WRC homologation there needed to be 5000 special editions of the car that were sold to the public that more closely resembled the racing cars. Some of the things done to make them more similar were only cosmetic (in the 6th gen Celica GTFour WRC there's non-funtional anti-lag piping on the exhaust manifold), some were functional (the timing belt air scoop on the 5th gen Celica) and some can be made functional with a few tweaks (the intercooler sprayer on the 5th gen Celica).

...I've spent a lot of time around Celicas. I know a pile of other odd facts about them but I doubt anyone else would find them interesting.

Top Gear mentioned that at some point, I think during their tuning challenge in an early series.

The 2010 Lexus SC430 was the last car to have standard cassette player.
However the 2011 Ford Crown Victoria had cassette option.

The McLaren F1 Prototype had a Chevrolet 454 big block V8.

Gordon Murray(chief engineer of McLaren F1) asked Honda 3 times to build approx. 550hp 4.5L V10 or V12.

Honda declined.

McLaren had to compromise with BMW 6.1L V12, it was a lot heavier than they wanted, but had lots of power so ended up getting the fastest top speed record.

As most have seen it at ricescene meets, the Del Sol SIR had a fully automatic roof / trunk.
Also notorious for failing.
