What Comes with Used Car from Dealership?

I just bought a used car from a dealership for about $80k, but I noticed that there is only 1 key and no original owners manual. An extra key would cost another $3-400, and I dont even know if you can purchase an owners manual. I believe that these are important things to have if I ever plan on reselling the car which is why its such a big deal. Also the owners manual might help you diagnose any issues you encounter on the road.

I know that it doesnt seem like a significant amount, but aren't all cars suppose to come with a set of keys and the manul? Is it wrong to "demand" that there be these things included before finalizing? Thanks

Edit: Not finalized yet, well I believe I have 24hrs to cancel if I choose to do so in the "cooling off" period

considering youre giving the dealership 80k, im sure they would have worked with you to assure you had those. But if you already finalized, hard to say if theyll play ball

These are important especially for an $80K car! However, since it is a used car, I think it would have been prudent for you to confirm before signing the contract. If you knew it would only come with one fob/key and an extra one would cost $400, I'd negotiate that into bottom line.

For used cars it all depends on how many keys the previous owner/auction gave and if the owner turned in the manual during trade.

I'm sure you can buy a manual online but keys can run up to 7-800 bucks if they're the smart keys.

Getting a manual is easy. Depending on what car you bought, some manufacturers have owners manuals online. Or a simple Google search and you can find one usually in PDF form for download from other owners of that same car. That's what I had to do when i bought my used Suzuki GSXR 600.

As for key, you may be able to negotiate with the dealer but most likely you'll have to buy another one yourself.

You should work those in the deal. Save yourself the headache and make sure you get 2 keys.

Thats a crappy situation for a 80K car. I bought a used car for half that and they gave me two key fobs as well as a valet key with an owner's manual.
Try and negotiate at least two keys and have it re programmed so the old keys wont work anymore on that car. You are paying 80 grand after all

Not surprising that some used cars will only come with one key but negotiate it into your deal if you still can. The dealer would be stupid to lose a deal over a second key and owner's manual lol.

You mentioned the "cooling off" period which makes it sound like you've already committed to purchasing the car. That might put you in a worse off bargaining position if you've already said yes to buying it.

Would getting one extra key be a big enough dealbreaker to walk away from the deal? My assumption is that it's a good enough deal (i.e. you're saving more than a few hundred bucks) to you that you'd sign the papers and commit to buying.

Doesn't hurt to ask though. Seeing you just spent 80k with them, the least they can do is discount the parts & labour so it's not too painfully expensive if they're not willing to throw it in.

Saw your edit ... if I were you, I'd enact the cancel clause within 24 hrs if they do not pony up for a 2nd key/fob.

You've been quite mysterious about other details ... we are all curious, what did you get for $80K? Maybe it was a steal so you should take the deal and run or, maybe you should really hold your ground and get that 2nd key/fob and for $80K, a year of maintenance thrown in, extended warranty, and a trip to Disney.

They'll be idiots to cancel a deal over $400 and a sub $100 owner's manual.

OP, what kind of car are you buying...

Thanks for everyones input. I have still today to cancel, so thats what I mean. I went to get the key priced out at a local dealership this morning and it was $960 tax in!!!!!! Fob and key

I just wanted to know if it was a reasonable request without sounding too much like a demanding dick. I think spending 80k on a car thats the least you could do

edit: I dont want to list the car bought or put the dealership name out there because nothign is confirmed yet. The price wasnt a great deal, but it was fair, slightly below market value.

Unless they already told you the agreed price would not include the spare key and manual you should pursue it. What if you lose your key.

But yeah they would be dumb to let a deal go because of $500. Unless theirs only $500 gross left which i highly doubt lol

If it is the same brand dealer as your used car, what costs them $960 really cost them about $300. For heaven's sakes ... I don't know why I feel so invested in this but ... demand that 2nd key/fob !!!!!

Got our 13 CRV from Tofu and the key and manual were missing. It was a lease return. We were made aware of this and negotiated accordingly.

A new key / fob and programming from Honda was was $180. Haven't bought a manual yet. Plenty on ebay but of course depends on what you bought.

If the owner traded in the vehicle and only gave the dealer one key then the next buyer is usually stuck with the consequence of that. Its not very common but it gets more common as the vehicle gets older. Myself will tell customers that there isn't a spare and the ones who find it a problem we typically split the dealer cost on a new one unless its off make (which is no where close to 300% as suggested in the post above). But again its pretty rare.
