Lost data on hard drive and need help to recover

So it came to my realization today that all the files in my downloads folder are all gone.

I have no restore points and tried using file recovery programs to no avail.

I tried checking the hard drive for errors/corruption and the results came out clean.

I'm feeling hopeless on being able to recover my data...what do revscene?

it's a terrible feeling but I think there's hope

1. do not write data over it, ie. add more files, installs, run intensive programs etc.

2. look up recovery apps like recuva

you have a pretty good chance of recovery I bet

Might be the mbr got corrupted best bet is to get an external dock and check it on another computer. Plus it's easier when you're doing a file recover

What OS you are using? What file format the disc is formatted in? GUID or MBR? NTFS / exFAT? etc??

If you can recover the files, chances are you will have to manually rename the file names.. so you will have to do a cost / benefit calculation. If it is just randomly downloaded stuff I would just move on.

If you're running NTFS, I recommend taking the hard drive out of your computer and using an external dock on another computer to read the hard drive. This will prevent any more data being written on the hard drive. Use tools like Recuva to attempt to recover those missing files. I use Recuva from time to time and it has save me a lot of time.

Good luck.

As long as you keep in mind that even the most reliable line of hard drive there is still a likelihood for you to end up with a gimped drive.

I like BackBlaze quarterly reports here.

Also with External Drives you can't really tell which drive is in the enclosure.

external hard drives are usually the lowest end models in an enclosure. eg: i have taken a ew WD external backup drives and they were all WD Green drives.
