| 16,000kms for the first oil change.
I just took in my 2016 corolla for its first scheduled maintenance and they didnt even change the oil. 8000kms and all they did was "inspect" the car and "check" to see if anything needed to be replaced. They then rotated the tires and sent me home. My first service was complimentary and its a leased vehicle so i really dont give a hoot. but if it was my own personal car, i would be quite upset they arent changing the oil.
1) how can they get away with not changing the oil at 8000kms? the first oil change is the most important isnt it? I checked the oil and it looked pretty black to me.
2) why rotate the tires at 8000kms? that doesnt make any sense. I thought you have to go at least 20,000kms before you need to rotate.
I asked the service adviser and he told me thats the new procedures from toyota. He said its even the same for lexus.
16,000kms before they replace the oil..... thats insane.

The oil and filter technology today is far superior than it was decades ago when people would say do an oil change ever 4k kms or 3 months.
When I bought my CRV in 2007, it has a maintenance indicator and the manual says to change the oil when the indicator showed OIL 15%.
So I did, and it didn't come on until I had driven over 14k kms. I was concerned, yet curious, so I sent the oil to Blackstone labs and they said the oil was still fine and had plenty of life left. This was on the factory fill oil that came with the brand new car.
After that, I still change my oil when the indicator shows 50% as that's around 8k kms and about what I feel comfortable with.
Learn how to do your own oil changes and basic maintenance and do it whenever you want.
EDIT: If you do a quick google, or even check your manual, a lot of the Toyota sites say the new cars that come with synthetic oil need the oil changed at 10k miles/16k kms.

I believe it's also in the manual as well for your oil change interval, but Toyota calls for every 10000 miles or 12 mounths (whichever comes first) for the Corolla when using synthetic. So technically they didn't do anything wrong.
For me I change my oil every 5k kms cause changing oil is cheaper than changing an engine. But that's just me |

Since when did Corollas need an oil change?
Just kidding. I believe the newer engines now use synthetic oil, so this oil change interval is of no surprise. If you don' thit 16,000KM, I would at least do the oil change once a year.

According to the service manual of my vehicle, it recommends changing the oil every 12,000 km and rotate the tires every 6,000 km. I do my own maintenance on my vehicle, so those two get done at recommended intervals.
Tire rotations allows for even wear on all of your tires. I would do them...

Nissan has switched to an 8,000K / 6 month schedule as well. LOF and tire rotation every 8k along with other stuff.
Tire rotations I would do every 8k, easiest way to prevent uneven tire wear.
LOF..well I would personally never go past 8000k..
Do Corolla's even use synthetic?? I would assume they use bulk 5w30 or something
A lot of it has to do with marketing. Less visits / less spending on maintenance attracts buyers

I recently did some car shopping and was surprised to learn that the new Corollas are using synthetic.

craaazzzy... given that ill drive around 20,000kms a year. I would only really need 4 oil changes before the lease is done.
The amount of tire rotation seems excessive too. The corolla doesnt have 285 width performance tire, they are some narrow little prius tires (205). Doesnt really seem like rotating them will do much and is just overkill.

Newer cars that are made in the last 5 years, the tolerance and finishing of heads, pistons and cylinder walls have improved (think Skyactiv etc); hence the need to go with thinner oil. You would want to avoid thicker oil due to the tight tolerances, you want some oil to get in vs none can get in.
Also Corolla don't have a turbo engine, so the oil won't break down as quickly.. and that's where better tribology of synthetics comes into play.
In the end, the worse case scenario is who pays for the warranty. Stick with what manufacturers recommend vs doing what the Internet tells you to do, the latter won't pay for the damage if things go south.

Tire rotation is a case by case basis but usually 8-10k is where I see them needing it.

Do manufacturers still do a break-in period oil change? Around ~1000 miles (or kms?)?

I recently did some car shopping and was surprised to learn that the new Corollas are using synthetic. | toyota 0W20 is synthetic. so if your oil cap says 0W20, then unless requested otherwise, standard procedure is to install 0W20 synthetic during an oil change service. our shop uses 0W20 for all 5W20/0W20 applications...

i followed BMW oil change interval on a 09 335i for the first 4 years...(coz free oil change)
24000km
can is still running 8 years later at 220,000km. (after 4 years I started doing oil change every 15-20K tho)
Frequent oil change is overrated. (flame suit on )

To me, the question of 16k+ OCI isn't a matter of whether the engine is still running at 150k+ or maybe even 200k+. Instead, it is how well it is running at that point. If you do an engine compression + leakdown test at those higher mileages, what kind of numbers are you seeing? When you flip your valve cover, how much sludge is there on your valvetrain (and other parts of the engine)?
