Why 1000cc motorcycles so expensive all the sudden?

Did you notice that 1000cc bikes became really expensive?
They used to be maybe like couple thousand $ more than the 600cc.

As a reference, Hayabusa is still at $15,399 https://www.suzuki.ca/?q=en/node/4146

Suzuki GSX-R1000R
$21,899
https://www.suzuki.ca/?q=en/node/4134

Yamaha YZF-R1M
$24,999.00
Yamaha Motor Canada :: Products :: Motorcycles and Scooters :: Sport :: 2017 YZF-R1M ABS

Honda CBR1000RR SP
$23,999
CBR1000RR > Sports Bike for Total Control

Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10RR
$21,499

i blame Ducati. They set the precedent that you can get away charging 25k for a bike.

Litre bikes are hard as fuck to sell used... ask me how I know... so you can grab a used one of Craigslist for pretty cheap, much cheaper than an equivalent 600 that everyone wants.

Also, there's a motorcycle forum on here Timpo.

I can't go on Motorcycle forum because few years ago I posted Honda CBR trike project and other custom bikes so I got banned.

yeah but traditionally, 1000cc supersport bikes have always been cheaper than larger sportbikes such as Ninja ZX14R or GSX-R1300 Hayabusa.

But now ZX10 and GSX-R1000 are more expensive, like a lot more expensive.

Aprilia has similar price tag to the Japanese Big 4

Aprilia RSV4-RF
$23,995
Aprilia Canada - Motorcycles - 2017 RSV4 RF ABS

MV Agusta F4RR
$29,995

BMW is now the cheapest superbike manufacture around.
They used to make HP4(expensive version of S1000RR), but at this point, they're the cheapest by several thousand $.

BMW S1000RR
$18,200
BMW Motorrad Canada

one of the main factors why litre bikes cost so much now is because of all the extra features they have compared to their 600cc counter parts

abs (most 600cc bikes have this now), traction control, wheelie control etc.

then you have extra goodies like tft screen, brembos, ohlins etc.

you can get a barebone R1 (R1S) for like $15k - whereas the new R6 is $14k

getting a litre bike is IMO safer than a 600cc due all the safety features it comes with now compared 600cc with has no electronics for the most part unless you add aftermarket tc etc.

... if you don't know, then you don't follow the motorcycle industry.

basic answer: technology.

Some of it is the dollar sucking... S1000RR was $14,000 its first year out and now it's $18,000 and that bike hasn't changed at all technology wise.

you're right, inflation does make it seem like liter bikes are much more expensive than they used to be but as e.lo said, it's because of all the R&D into the electronics that make them more expensive than anything else.

And you're wrong about the S1K, it's changed quite a bit since 2009.

I watch several motorcycle channels on YouTube and sometimes they say the reason why Japanese 1000cc bikes today are so technologically advanced is because the BMW S1000RR raised the bar back in the day.

all the bikes you listed are basically the 'type R' version of the bike which they've all come out with within the last generation (less than 5 years) that come with upgraded forks and shock, better electronics tech (traction control, abs, etc), and things like that. eg: CBR1000RR SP is about $4000 more than just a CBR1000RR

Prices have climbed a little over the last 10 years, but the 'base model' bikes are more in line with where an incremental price increase.

edit: also lets stop and look at that 'really expensive' comment for a second. For like $20g you can ride away from your local bike dealership with something that comes off the showroom floor that will outperform a half million dollar supercar with absolutely cutting edge tech. Its actually incredible they don't cost more than they do.

The poser bikes are still here and they are very affordable to own if you want an extra toy at home. 15k can get you a brand new R6. (for reference, 2003 R6 was 10k when new). 1000cc bike is for serious racer or filthy rich poser.

It looks mean as fuck.

The only thing you posted in this thread that I didn't want to fail you for lol.

Japanese manufacturers used to introduce a new generation every 2 years until the economic crisis hit in 08. Everyone stopped buying unnecessary toys like sport bikes and as a result R&D was at a standstill. Bikes like the R6 that was updated every 2 years went unchanged from 2008-2017. When the S1000RR came out in late 2009 it was a huge wakeup call for the industry. At almost 40whp more than some other literbikes and with a full electronics package that included traction control, wheelie control and a quickshifter all while keeping the price within $2000 of its Japanese counterparts, the S1K completely fucked the sport bike market up. It shifted the trend from what was a 600cc dominated market to a much larger demand for 1000cc bikes. The S1K effectively ignited the superbike war again and we're all much better as a result of it.

And Timpo, asking why an Aprilia RSV4 FW-GP costs $115k is like asking why a WTCC 3 series costs $300k. Because racecar.

Looks like Yamaha kept a lot of stuff the same.
I don't think you can tell much of a difference. Watch this review.

Same frame, same motor. just better brakes and suspension and TC that you don't really need on a 600. I guess they find it hard to make a brand new one when the R1 is selling like hot cakes in North America and everyone in Asia buying the R3 and R125.

That's a good news for current 2006+ R6 owners, they can easily do the 2017 conversion.

The OEM fairing would be expensive, but very soon there will be injection molded fairing available on eBay for like $500 along with aftermarket headlight/taillight.
