OTA update with unlocked AT&T phone from usa

Hi, I am an android noob. Can someone tell me if I will be able to receive OTA update if I buy an unlocked At&T phone from the states to use on Rogers network?

Dumb question double down: If this At&t phone is unlocked, doesn't it mean that the software update then is pushed from the maker (HTC) instead of At&T?
Or does the update still needs to come from At&t even though my phone is unlocked for using it on rogers network.

Dumb question number 3 : is there anyway to turn my unlocked at&t phone into a "factory unlocked, non-carrier-bound" firmware so that I can enjoy the faster OTA android update from HTC .

Cheers, and thanks in advance.

1- Use WillMyPhoneWork.net - Check if your phone works on a network to see if it will work here

2 - If its still running the original AT&T version of the rom, then it should come from AT&T. Carriers push out updates thats tracked by IMEI, I believe. not 100% sure
Phones being unlock doesnt mean anything except that you can flash other roms.

3 - Depends on the phone and if its rooted or not, you can just install custom roms or factory roms.

So if I wish to get att update , I need to drive to the states and use their cell towers or wifi , I wonder if I will get update on canadian soil.

Most phones usually get updates over Wifi. This means you don't necessarily have to be on the original carrier's network to get the updates.

If you really want the carrier updates, you can always grab the ROM from places like Sammobile and update manually via Odin.

EDIT: Sorry, just noticed you said HTC. Obviously Sammobile will be no help to you since it's Samsung specific. First part I believe still applies though about being able to get updates via WiFi.

EDIT2: Looks like HTC has the carrier firmware on their website: http://www.htc.com/us/support/rom-downloads.html#att

you can always go to XDA and search for your device and install custom or factory HTC firmware

Im not sure about the process of the update as I never wait for OTA updates. All my devices are rooted and custom flash or in this case my S7 edge is not rooted but I used Odin to flash the files, which doesnt remove the warranty...
