UHP A/S Tire Choice - Michelin PS AS3+ vs. Conti DWS06
 

Hi guys, trying to choose between these two very well regarded tires. The vehicle that it will be going on is an Acura CSX base model.

Pricing will be close between the two, with an advantage to the Continentals (as always, Michelin is more expensive). I got Kal Tire to price-beat Canadian Tire, so we are looking at $610 tax in for the Continentals, plus a $65 mail-in rebate (so approximately $545 though I tend to not include MIRs in price consideration). The Michelins from Costco are $670 tax in, with their instant $70 rebate already applied.

Any thoughts? DWS06 is supposed to be a good successor to the DWS, which I have driven before, but the Michelin is supposed to be much better in the dry. I have winter tires on winter wheels so these will be run from March-November, mostly.

I would go ps as3 for sure. Just from seeing them daily vs the contis and how each wear down. But I am bias.

Don't forget that extra cost for tires at Costco includes free flat repairs and rotations for the life of the tire, plus 5 year warranty

I'm with 320. A/S 3's all the way. I have a full set on my maz and they've been pretty awesome. Stock tires were those pirrelli p zero Nero and they sucked. Sticky yes but burnt out in 30k

Don't forget the Pirelli P Zero All Season Plus - they tweaked their compound and now it's Tire Rack's top pick. The BF Goodrich g-Force Comp-2 A/S is also highly rated on Tire Rack (https://www.tirerack.com/tires/surve...jsp?type=UHPAS)

Myself, I'd go with the DWS06 partly cause they're the lightest tire of the bunch and still provides enough performance otherwise. I'd never use up all the dry grip from the Michelins and prefer wet weather grip anyways.

Kal Tire includes free rotations, balancing and road hazard for tires bought from them so I see that as on par with Costco.

I can't speak for the DWS06.

FWIW I have a set of original DWS on my car right now and I was surprised how well they were in snow, the road noise is decent as well. Although all I have to compare it to is a worn out set of BFG sport-comp 2 which are on bigger wheels and thinner sidewalls, so it isn't much of a fair comparison.

I have DWS06 on my S3.

Performed exceptionally well in the past 2 snow storms we had. Car didn't slide until I forced it to do so. Even did some fairly steep downhills during the snow.

In the dry, I felt like the sidewall was soft. The turn in isn't as sharp as Michelin AS3.

Have had DWS not the 06 version on my cars for the last 5+ years. The wet performance on these are absolutely incredible. For that reason alone, I won't be deviating from this choice.

ps as3 are completely useless in the snow.

I would go with the dws / dws06 - I think I read somewhere that the dws is still better.

why is everyone putting snow in the decision making.... the op clearly stated he has a set of dedicated snow tires

I had the previous generation DWS on two of my previous cars, in both cases I found the sidewall to be very soft and weak and in both cases I managed to blow a tire going over a pothole. It seems Continental has kept with a softer than average sidewall with the DWS06 so I went with the AS3 instead for my mom's GLA and I'm pretty impressed with the way it handles.

That being said, given the better wet and snow performance of the DWS06 I would probably recommend those for a fairly pedestrian car, especially if you're not doing any autox etc.

Thanks guys. Yeah, I have snow tires for the car, but having some light snow capability would be nice - I drive the Sea to Sky almost every weekend, commuting to Vancouver from Pemberton. In the shoulder season, getting caught in a snowfall/snowstorm is very possible so some capability to handle light snow would be nice. I doubt that I'll be doing any auto-cross or HPD events with this car - it's a stock 2008 Acura CSX, with an automatic. It's a commuter car that's much better on fuel than my previous ride! Since I'll be putting on lots of KMs, good road manners, good fuel economy and good treadwear would be nice to have as well as good performance - I still like to take the corners on the S2S a bit faster than recommended! ;)

I'm running AS3 on my 1st gen TSX. Awesome traction in wet and dry. I don't expect the tread life to last the 70000km warranty. It's so sticky, I'm getting worst fuel economy than on my winters.

Make sure to keep rotation receipts to get the Michelin treadlife warranty. My buds at the tire shops say they're pretty good about claims.

cause snow happens. and when it's cold and rainy, tires with some snow capability will be better than others.

I'm currently on the AS3+ on my IS350, and I had the original DWS on my IS300

DWS was better in the rain + snow for sure. Soft sidewall

AS3+ better in the dry. Better feeling harder sidewall

Ended up going with DWS06. Just drove up to Kamloops, tire was great on the highway​. Great ride, low noise except on the super rough parts and handling was good. It rolls less than the old DWS, and much better than the crappy tires I had before.
