Questions about parking street signs

On the left side, on a Sunday, people can park here more than 2 hours and you don't need a permit right?

On a sunday, people can park here any time even if they are not a resident right?

On a sunday, anyone can park here and is not a passenger zone right?

I read the first one as people without permits are only allowed to park during 9am-6pm mon-sat for 2 hours. Sunday would be permit only.

My interpretation of the first one (left sign) is that people with permits can park for more than 2 hours during the 9am - 6pm M-Sat. (usually the permit holders would be residents of the area the sign is posted) Sunday would be a free for all.

I know. One of our techs was parking on a side streets. It have 2 signs. One one said No parking at all like the No parking sign. And right next to it it have a sign that reads 2hour parking with permit. So he park there(he got a permit) and got a parking ticket. Took picture of the parking sign and try to disput it with the city.

Let's just say even the city workers are so confuse by it and couldn't give us a straight and they need time to figure it out. After a week no response and we call again they are still looking into it lol. We just paid the fine and move it.

Maybe they couldn't understand your English?

Let's see a picture of the signs. I'm sure RS will be able to help you decipher them.

Work pays for it anyways since the tech was using a work vehicle at that time. We all know how "fast" city does thing. Is better just pay and move on. This happened like 2 years ago I think.

There are quite a few gems in Downtown where you can find free parking. You just need to learn to read the signs and spend an extra 5-10mins to find them. After you've found them a few times you'll know where to look.

Some cities (I know Melbourne is one, I heard Seattle might be, not sure about Van) make their parking signs extra confusing to create more revenue as people would misundertand the sign and park illegally

This is my first post. So glad to find this. I rarely have to park in one of these signs but I have always have this question in mind on the first pic on left. Hope you guys can help..

I don’t know how to explain, so I’ll use 4 different scenarios to express where I lost.

Which one of below is the right interpretation?

A) Mon-Sat from 9am-6pm, you may park here for 2 hours. UNLESS you have a permit, you may ignore the above 2 hours rule and park for MORE THAN 2 hours during Mon-Sat 9am-6pm. (Because the above rule does NOT apply to you : Its meant for non-permit holders);

In short :
Non-permit holders can park 2 hours
Permit holders can park 2+ hours

B) Mon-Sat from 9am-6pm, you may park here for 2 hours. UNLESS you have a permit, you may NOT park here at all (Mon-Sat 9am-6pm 2 hours free parking spots here are Only Reserve for non-permit holders - If you are a permit holder, please park somewhere else)

In short :
Non-permit holders can park 2 hours
Permit holders can park 0 hour

C) Mon-Sat from 9am-6pm, you may park here for 2 hours. (And this rule you read above is only applying to the permit holders - If you are not a permit holder : You may park freely as long as you want)

In short :
Non-permit holders can park 2+ hours
Permit holders can park 2 hours

D) Mon-Sat from 9am-6pm, you may park here for 2 hours. (What you read above is for permit holders - If you are not a permit holder : You may not park here during the above mentioned time at all)

In short :
Non-permit holders can park 0 hour
Permit holders can park 2 hours

I believe the correct interpretation should be either A or B. I just added C & D just in case...

Note : I am quite positive it means non-permit holders can ignore the restriction on a Sunday, meaning non-permit holders can park for 6 or 8 or 10+ hours straight with no problem. (Please correct me if I’m wrong)

I just don’t fully understand this sign when I fall into their restricted time... e.g 11am on Wed

So, is it A, B, C or D?

(multiple choice lol)

Sorry for the long question + confusion.

Thanks a bunch!

Answer: A

Also for a non permit holder, you could technically park from 4pm until 11am the next day.

i always think of

"EXCEPT XXXX"

means if you are one of those special people listed after the word EXCEPT... then the above posted rules do not apply to you.

isn't there a three hour parking limit by-law regardless of where you are in the city?

Yes, times on the sign mean when the rules are in effect. Outside of it, is standard bylaws.

you know who can answer all these questions?

311

One time at fire works, I found a spot very close to the end of the block. I called and asked what the by law on parking close to the edge was , she replied (iirc 3m) - i was like i don't have a measuring thing. she said roughly 3 "tiles" on the side walk if my clears 3 tiles i'm good. it was like 2.75 - she said it's fine.

some bylaw attendants carry a measuring tape
and tow even if it's a non-busy side street instead of just a ticket
