Why is Galchenyuk the key to the Canadiens’ interest in Yakupov? To answer that question, it’s important to remember where both players came from before being drafted first overall (Yakupov) and third overall (Galchenyuk) in 2012. Playing together in the OHL with the Sarnia Sting, the duo of Galchenyuk and Yakupov was a force to be reckoned with. During the 2010-11 season, Galcheyuk scored 31 goals and 83 points in 68 games – a point total good for third in the OHL among rookies that season, behind only Sven Baertschi and Yakupov, his linemate with the Sting. In 65 games in that very same season, while flanking Galchenyuk in Sarnia, Yakupov scored 49 goals and 101 points and proved to be a true game-changer. Reuniting the two at the NHL level could prove to be a smart move to try and rejuvenate both players moving forward. | Some players just can't make the jump from major junior to the NHL. Success at the level will not likely translate to the next. The most dominant line in recent memory has been Patrick Kane, Sergei Kostitsyn and Sam Gagner with the London Knights. The three combined for almost 400 points in ONE season. If they played together in the NHL it would be Patrick Kane featuring two sand bags.

Hmm, just googled it... didn't realize it was really a brand name for pickles. Learn something new every day.

Vlasics are good, but Steinfelds are better.

Nice to see the new signings like Gagner and Weircioch so excited to come here on social media... Gagner already did a little video of his son in a Gagner Canucks t-shirt and Weircioch posted a pic of himself as a kid with his Canucks jersey on.

What are you supposed to do though? Best goalie in the world, you might as well just tell him to write a number down on a piece of paper and say ok.

Sam's dad was part of a package coming to Vancouver in the Pavel Bure trade. He played on one of the worst Canucks teams ever that netted us the Sedins.
Sam's dad, after being an assistant coach for the London Knights while Sam played there, joined the Canucks as the director of player personnel.
Sam's dad coached an inline hockey team featuring Sam and Chris Tanev during the summers in Ontario. He parlayed that relationship into convincing Tanev to sign with Vancouver.
Sam and Tanev routinely played against each other in the GTHL.
Sam's dad is runoured to have been the driving force behind drafting Horvat in the 2013 draft.

Cap's gone up 16.6% over the last 6 years, but the highest paid goaltender that season (Lundqvist) had a $6.875M cap hit (and that wasn't a cheater contract, either; though you could argue Luongo's cap hit should've been more like $7.1M because his was a cheater contract).
In any case, that's over a 50% increase in the top goaltender cap hit with only a 16.6% increase in the salary cap.
If Price wants to win, he probably should've knocked $1M off that at least.

That argument could be made for all the players commanding big dollars though. All the other best players are commanding $10m+. Why shouldn't the best goalie in the world get that as well. Unfortunately Montreal doesn't have the luxury of having an up and coming goalie who could potentially take over the starting position. Allowing them to pursue the option of trading and saving cap space. Like I said, what was Montreal really supposed to do?

Who signs a 38-year-old to a 3-year, $18.75M contract with a full NMC? Holy shit is that an atrocity.

Marleau hasn't cracked 50 points in 2 years on a loaded Sharks team.
I could MAYBE see this for Thornton, but Marleau? I mean, he's durable, I'll give him that, but he's at best a complimentary top six player now, let alone in 2-3 years.

This Marleau contract will be an albatross in 1 or 2 years. He's turning 38 in September and his overall play and point totals have been steadily decreasing over the past 3 seasons.
At least the Price contract, while extremely rich, was justified given that he's the Canadiens best player.
