are we a rebuilding team? Or are we trying to win now? Signing doesn't make too much sense to me.
Simple, it's the Sedin's last year as the face of the franchise, You have to do something for them, if not its an insult considering what they have done as players for the team, and as people in the community. If it fails, you can still trade players like Vanek, and Ganger away because they don't have NTCs, nor long/bad contracts. Meaning we can still tank from TDL.
Many will say, "well you can still play the young guys!!". But a player like Goldobin needs 15min a night in a top 6 role, he wont get that on this team. Even before the Vanek, and Gagner deals he wouldn't get it. If there's injuries to a top 6 he can go from playing top minutes in the A to top minutes in the NHL
People may also say, "what if the Sedin's come back, they will take that time away next year from the players again!!" Like I mentioned before, this is the last year of the contracts where they are the face of the franchise. The team knows, and they know that if they re-sign they will be playing a lesser role, and taking the backseat to these players. This means a shift in PP1 to PP2 and a shift from 1st line to 3rd.
Bo made the push to become a leader for this team last year, and I think you see it from Baer and one of Burmistrov/Boeser this year.
Anyways this is what I expect the roster to look like forward wise to start(the bottom 6 will be all over the place because we have players who can play multiple spots)
Sedin - Sedin - Eriksson
Baer - Bo - Boeser
Vanek - Sutter - Rodin
Gaunce - Gagner - Burmistrov
Granlund(ir)
Rumors Granlund will start on IR due to his wrist surgery. Don't be surprised if Chaput got in over another until Granlund healthy.
D is pretty simple to figure out, but I think Holm is the 7th D
If you want to know why I picked this, feel free to read more lmao
Spoiler!
roster before vanek
sedin- sedin- granlund
baer- bo -
Eriksson - sutter - gagner
gaunce* - burmistrov*- dorsett*
*beside players who don't have a job secured(total 4 spots with the empty) Gaunce - not much offense from him during his first year in the nhl, we had a shit 4th line though. has offensive skill, is big, solid d, can pk, can play lw/c Burmistrov - nearly .5ppg with arz after jets failed. good d, has skill, can pk. this looks like a player who was messed with by bad coaches.(Noel, Maurice. yikes) Kinda reminds me of how Nino was treated by NYI before he got traded and started lighting it up, not exactly the same though. Dorsett - I don't think he plays, and I think the team knows it. I'm expecting LTIR
So who replaces these players or can grab an open spot(Ill start with easiest to demote) Virtanen - Size and speed are great, but he still didn't do much in the AHL. He needs more responsibility, more time in the AHL, and more time learning a PRO game. Boucher - Heavy shot, could pot goals. He's slow, bad d, and pretty small. He was thought of as an option on the PP (This is now redundant with Gagner and Vanek) Goldobin - Tons of skill, and speed. Yet, hes not a top 6 forward on this team, even without Vanek. He needs to play a lot, and work on his D.
Rodin - He has tons of skill, hes shown it. Older, and more experienced than Goldobin, but seemingly has injury problems a lot. Development not hampered my less minutes. Boeser - I think hes ready now, and has chemistry with baer and bo like Rodin does. But he still has a lot to learn
Basically you take Boeser and Rodin as they both have chemistry with the second line and are offensive players, who are better responsibly d than the others.
Then you take Burmistrov and Gaunce due to what they offer position wise, pk wise and because they are more ready
Sure you could have goldobin learn d in the nhl at 5min a game on the 4th line, but is that worth it? no
I think you can pretty much assume Rodin and Holm are on the team if healthy. If there weren't assurances from the club that they'd play in the NHL, I think they'd be playing in Sweden this season (esp. Holm).
The young guys will go to the AHL, IMO, including Boeser.
the contract is being announced on Monday. what mess?
no one from 1040 is going to have the proper info on it, the canucks are letting the new sportsnet channel announce it first as a big FU to 1040. botch is just taking shots in the dark and trying to get people mad at ownership and management
It's the twins "last year" so you sign an aging Vanek who is a consistent non performer when it counts and has only racked up points in recent years with top tier linemates?
It says a lot that no other team in the league would sign him at 2 mill per.
This team and management is so backwards now Jesus it's hard to be a fan. At this point, imo, it's not just medelling ownership (if that was ever the case) it's a management team that doesn't have a feel for the pulse of the fan and essentially makes signings for the sake of bringing in stop gap players instead of rotating prospects in that position.
There were already few enough spots as is and now with vanek you have MAYBE two spots where prospects will rotate into the lineup. If that means that Boeser is out of the lineup more often than not I think that's a huge detriment to his development imo.

The Canucks won't be winning the cup with this team, so a lot of season ticket holders only positive was to think that the Canucks would be icing a young team. The signing of Vanek and taking away of a roster spot from one of those prospects is definitely going to leave a bad taste in a lot of people's mouth.
^Unless a youngster earns Vanek's spot, sure. If that happens, there's something to be excited about. If it doesn't then who cares. The youngster grows in the A and we have a decent point producer up front.
At this stage in the game, let anyone with a half decent resume have a shot at a roster spot. When the young guys prove they're really ready, then I'll question signings like Vanek.

If you think 2 of our forward prospects are ready, you're out to lunch.
Also think about this, 3-5 of the 7 teams in our division are in their window for a cup push. Edm, Cal, Anah, LA, SJ(prob done). On top of this, Arizona is pushing into that. Besides ARZ these teams will be rebuilding, or in cap hell when all our prospects are ready. So why rush them when all those other teams are in peak position or almost at peak position? The young guys will get crushed like Edm did.
Its smarter to ease them in. Bring in vets who can ease the load on the younger players you already have, and give your best prospect a shot (Boeser), while having those that aren't ready get tons of minutes in the AHL. Plus you can trade the vets for picks at the deadline, meaning more prospects. A 2nd/3rd from a "consistent non performer" seems like a good deal for me, especially in a super strong draft
Thats another good pick to join our prospects who will be coming into form in about 2-4years.
Petterson 2 to 3 years away
Dahlen 1 to 2
Juuolevi 1 to 2
Virtanen 1 to ?
Demko 2 to 3
Gaudette 1 to 2
Why would you try to push it when the rest aren't ready?
benning this morning on 650: expect deal to be done with horvat next week. (wennberg contract sets a number for them to be around) room for 2 young guys if they prove they are ready. team announcement about sedins coming soon, rumors they are going to announce this is their last year
sedin interview: asked about playing out year, and retiring. answered as yes, very possible. said that the first thing green told them was that they weren't good enough last year
Vanek will be great trade bait during the trade deadline if he plays well. Could pick up a prospect or a 2nd. Low risk signing here. This is probably JB's plan. If he plays really well, Canucks resign him.
I'm not too optimistic about this Vanek signing. If he was good, he wouldn't be on his 7th NHL team in the past 3 years! Maybe he's going for some sorta record. Also with you guys saying he'll be good trade bait come deadline, he was traded last year from Detroit to Florida for Dylan Mcllrath and a third rounder. So that's the kinda return we can expect this time around. But hopefully he plays well and proves everybody wrong.

except he hasn't been on 7 teams in 3 years. this will be his 7th in 16years. jagr, housley, coffee, guerin, whitney, lang played for 8+ teams. does that mean they aren't good? some players prefer playing time, and situations better than playing less time on a good team. especially those who know they will be traded to a playoff team at the deadline. a 3rd rounder is good value, because its a round where theres still a decent chance of hitting an nhler. for a player who "doesn't show up" hes still over .6ppg, and considering he gets the most slag for not showing up in the playoffs, he has over .5ppg there too. he annoys teams because hes got awesome skill, just doesn't show it all the time

Van will be his 7th team going into the 5th consecutive season.
- he got traded from Buffalo to net a big return in the final year of his contract in 2013-2014.
-islanders loved him and offered him a 7yr 50 mil extension, but he didnt like where the islanders were going, so they dealt him
-montreal only acquired him for the playoff push, so they had no business in resigning him afterwards
so while he was on multiple teams in the 2013-2014 season, that's not necessarily an indication of him being a bad player. teams have various reasons to trade players. if you know they're going to walk away as a UFA at the end of the season or if you can't afford to offer him a contract, you might as well get something in return.
even though he was on 2 teams last year, he put up 48 points. guess how many Canucks had more than 48 points last season? only Horvat and Hank. The bar is pretty low on our team, so I hope he takes this opportunity to turn it up.
I feel vanek signing is more of him grooming boeser. There was an article about vanek training with boeser and how he enjoyed training with him because he was willing to listen.
Shit. It's only $2 mil. We spend more on Dorsett lol

He fetched a 3rd last season after 15 goals and 40 points and didn't have a goal after he deadline. You're not getting a second for him unless he's close to 25 goals, and if that.

I'm ok with the young talents starting in the AHL this season.
Let the shitty vets, dead weights, plugs, take the brunt and misery of a shitty campaign while the kids build up confidence in the minors.
Slowly integrate them over the course of the season to the roster if needed if said deadweights become too useless/injury.
