2018 Honda Accord preview: A new engine, new look and more

The era of the Honda Accord V6 is winding down, and no one should be surprised by how it ends: Honda comes late to the 2.0T game, yes. But if its initial tease is indicative, the 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four in the next Accord will stand out in a crowded marketplace.

The 10th-generation Accord, shown here in camouflage and expected this fall as a 2018 model, will share its platform with the recently launched Civic sedan and CR-V crossover. The new Accord will also share its base powertrain with those brand cousins: a 1.5-liter turbocharged four, rated at 175 hp in the Civic and 190 in the CR-V, with a continuously variable automatic transmission. The Accord lineup will include a two-motor hybrid built around the 2.0-liter, Atkinson-cycle four used in the current Accord Hybrid.

Honda’s new 2.0-liter turbo will be the Accord’s upgrade engine, and it could be the most powerful in its class, but the news doesn’t end there. The new engine will come standard with a Honda-developed 10-speed torque-converter automatic (the first in a front-drive car), and both the 1.5 and 2.0 turbo engines will be offered with a six-speed manual. The leaves Accord and the Mazda 6 as the last bastions of the conventional manual among midsize sedans. Hallelujah.

The other big news on the powertrain front is the availability of a six-speed manual with either of the two conventional engines. "Based on Civic and Type-R, we know that the characteristics of these engines are very good with a manual transmission," a Honda rep tells us; Having just stepped out of a Type-R, we couldn't argue. And because we're not accountants or profit-focused product planners, we're not going to argue with their decision to include a manual transmission at all. As expected, the Accord remains front-drive regardless of engine and transmission.

better late with 2.0L turbo than never, like a 2.0L turbo boxer in the 86/BRZ from the factory.

Hmmm 301HP 8 Speed Camry or 10 Speed 2.0T Accord? Which one will be better to drive??

The Subaru Legacy is still available with a manual.

I believe the Buick Verano is available with a real transmission as well.

I've always wondered...are all these newer 8speed auto from toyota derived from the ISF unit?

The ISF unit is shared with the LS and is meant for Longitudinal Layout & RWD applications.

The Camry's 8 speed box is made by Aisin and was designed for Transverse layout and was first seen in the last gen RX350 F sport, and is in all new Volvos, FWD BMWs, etc.

So a new Honda sedan concept was released in Beijing which could hint to similar styling cues to the new 2018 10th gen Accord (which will be revealed this Friday)

Lots of Accord people are still mad over the fact that Honda replaced the V6 with an I4T. I had a 08 Accord Coupe V6. Nice sounding engine with a decent pull. If it has a MT, I would have kept it.

Hard to say at this point. Honda is super secret with the 10th Gen Accord. All we can do is wait.

V6 will naturally be smoother(less torque fluctuation is the technical term), but I4T will have better low-end torque. I personally like the exterior of the higher trim new Camrys, but I can't say the same for the lower trims.

I always felt the V6 priced itself above its competition. I've priced one out a few times and gave myself a heart attack when the msrp came up.

From what I've read all the Japanese 8 speed or 10 speed act like normal 6 speed autos with 2-4 additional gears of overdrive. The Lexus lc500 was like that
