ICBC and Dashcam/Video Evidence

After calling in a claim I raised the question of video evidence. The call taker at ICBC didn’t seem to know how to handle it. She asked a supervisor and learned the options were to drop off in person or upload to youtube. I found it surprising they don’t have a system that allows claimants to upload digital evidence such as pictures or video, especially when submitting an online claim. I dropped off a USB drive to the claim centre.

They initially determined fault at 50/50 because both cars were backing up. After review of the video evidence they determined fault at 25/75 so no impact on my premiums, just have to pay 25% of the collision deductible.

Now ICBC is asking me to upload the video to youtube. Apparently the other party is not happy with the result and the adjuster wants to use the video to help explain their decision. Again, seems odd that ICBC doesn’t have a proper system for this and is relying on the claimant to do the leg work. They have the video but won’t upload or share it themselves because they simply don't do that.

Has anyone else had to do this with/for ICBC?

I’ve accommodated their request so now that it’s online, here it is:

i have done this a multiple of times.

uploaded on youtube. and sent link, however was told icbc can't access youtube via cooperate computers, it just depends on your adjuster.

How did they review your evidence?

so on 2 occasions, i had to drop off a "cd" at claim center. (wow they still have cd readers)

on 2 occasions where I submit a claim with dash cam footage I was able to send it via E-mail, but had to snip the video to only the relevant parts, otherwise it exceeds the 25MB easily.

I recently submitted video to ICBC for a claim, I put it on dropbox's public folder and just sent them the link to the video.

They had no trouble accessing it.

Dropbox would've been good. Email was not possible due to file size. ICBC must deal with dozens of digital evidence requests per day. I'm surprised they don't have a better system in place.

I went into an ICBC center when they were looking at the damage and just showed the adjuster the video.

IIRC, he asked for a copy and provided his own USB.

Wish I had a dash cam when I had a similar accident and it was deemed 50/50.

ICBC will default to 50/50 on most parking lot accidents.

My story:
I was approaching ramp going down underground parking, when I see headlights come up the same ramp. Lady was coming up ramp in parking lot, turned, drove straight into me. Gets out, mumbles something about not paying attention.

ICBC asks for dashcam footage after I mentioned in the claim that I had it, they take 10 days to review a 3km/h collision.

ICBC calls me at 8:30am, tells me it's 50/50. So I'm annoyed, ask what the process is to dispute, and adjuster goes off about how I need to go to court and the judge may find me 100% at fault, bs this bs that. I ask about Internal Review with manager, and he goes "oh yeah, well that's an option too." Motherfucker. I hang up.

17 minutes later he calls me, and said now they've decided I was actually 0% at fault. I have no idea if the dickhead was crookin' for ICBC, or if a manager overturned his decision when I mentioned "dispute", but my faith in ICBC has plummeted even further than I thought possible.

Overall, it took ICBC 10 days to process. Car was fixed in 2 days.

/rant.

tl;dr: fuck ICBC.

I don't believe you are required to show the person at fault anything. That's ICBC job to determine who is at fault. If the other party don't like the decision from ICBC, they can go sue ICBC.

E.g. I was in an accident last year, other party 100% at fault determined by ICBC. ICBC calls me back later on and asks if it's okay they show the other party footage, I said NO. End of claim.

100% not at fault.
After hitting a huge pot hole the spare tire underneath my van came dislodged.
I pull to the side and quickly came out to retrieve it some distance back. Behind me there happened to be a police car that passed by soon after and had witnessed this but didnt stop.

After ICBC claimed a car behind me was impacted and it was going to effect my insurance.
I questioned more about the claimants claim as I didnt have any immediate cars behind. This was obviously either someone making a false claim or ICBC was the fraudster.

I called the police to report the mysterious fraudster and they said the incident was even recorded by them but the information was passed to ICBC and they couldnt divulge into icbc's records.
Long story short ICBC dropped the claim and never revealed who the frauding "claimant" was.

I've had several incidents within the last year. Uploaded it to YouTube every single time. Even stalked the counter to see how many views I got to see how many times ICBC is reviewing the video, lol.

Never had any issues from sharing the video with that method.

Dash cam should be a requirement for all new cars. Not only it easier to see who is a fault, but also record all the cyclist who ingore traffic rules, gets into an accident and claim it was the drivers fault.

Chevy's Performance Data Recorder can act as one. Quality not nearly as great as some of the footage that I've seen from proper cams tho.
