Winter Driving Preparation Ideas
 

Seems like flurries are in the forecast and temperatures are starting to drop. Thought it would be a great time to start discussions how us Revsceners like to prepare for winter driving.

I'll start with some of the more unique things that I like to do:

• Some silica gel in the car to keep the windows from getting fogged when parked
• Shell 90 day Wash Pass that I share with coworkers to wash the salt off the bottom of my car once a week.
• Extra charging cables to make sure my phone is ready for any potential emergency calls
• 0W oil for easier morning starts
• Dashcam for any potential ICBC claims

How do you like to prepare for winter driving? What are some tips and wisdom that you'd like to share?

Windshield washer fluid (top up with winter fluid)
Have your charging system tested
Winter tires
Chains in the trunk
Emergency kit
Cat litter
Shovel
Check your lights, especially rear lights
If you own a Toyota, figure out how to activate your rear lights so people can see you in the dark, fog, rain

1) Cover your windshield with cardboard if you're exposed to mother nature to prevent windshield icing over night.

2) Tow straps if you don't plan on getting snows. Moreso for others to tow your ass out. I used mine a couple times to bail out a few people last winter.

3) Folding shovel in your trunk wouldn't hurt if you park outside during work and get hit by a snowstorm in the middle of the day. Or if you get stuck and need to shovel your way out.

4) Performing a battery test now wouldn't hurt for the colder weather.

5) Get winter washer fluid that won't freeze the second you spray them in -10c.

6) Blanket to stay warm on longer trips isn't a bad idea, eg Whistler / Coq

7) Do NOT yank or pull hard on your door handles if they are frozen. You have no idea how many customer we have come in for broken handles.

8) If your wipers are frozen, do NOT turn them on. If they are frozen shut, you will burn out your motor and possibly damage your links. Also very common repair in winter, especially last winter.

Also, PLEASE clear all / as much snow and ice off the top of your vehicle before driving. No one wants this to happen this winter:

I'm usually pretty on top of this stuff and figure it out on my own. But I always wondered why people freaked out about not clearing the snow off their roof. Always thought it was because of the blow back. Never thought about the fact it could block your forward view on braking. Funny, it's never happened to me and i've lived in a lot of snowy places. I'm the person people hate too. I guess I'll start shovelling. ha

^ it's also that sometimes the sheet of snow, now ice, on your roof turns into a missile on the hwy

Vancouverites dont prepare for winter. Look what happened last year. Ppl still running all seasons or summers tires. Speaking of which does anyone know if ICBC is doing mandatory snow tires yet?

lots of places already selling salt. Hopefully everyone is stocked up and ready for the winter. Might be another crazy one this year.

This is more so if you're doing trips into less populated areas, if you never leave the lower mainland then just some winter tires, and jumper cables should do you fine. If your battery is <5 yrs old you should be fine unless it gets to a steady -5/-10.

-if you end up in the ditch and your car isn't fucked, clear the front and rear of the car so your intake and exhaust aren't blocked and leave the car running

-get gas whenever you can

-straps AND shackles

-jumper cables

-sleeping bag (more compact than blankets and do the same thing)

-some foods

-some waters

-small shovel

-winter work gloves

-sand (less of a mess than kitty litter)

-cash, or beer, for the guy pulling you out of the ditch

Boots - I can go from underground to underground parking and never get my feet wet but if I have to get out 2" heels aren't useful.

Shovel, blanket, gloves and water always put in when winter comes.
Kit with jumper cables, work gloves, flashing lights for road are always in.

Dad taught me

Plan your common routes avoiding danger spots such as:

- inclines that get a lot of traffic
- street that get paved last
- inconsistent speed areas
- city of richmond
