| GM unveils autonomous vehicle with no steering wheel or pedals, plans for 2019 launch
I think GM just skipped a step or 2 and went right to the end. https://venturebeat.com/2018/01/12/g...s-2019-launch/

If you design a car with no steering wheel or pedals.. why are all the seats still facing forward as if you're driving.. lol

Prevent motion sickness maybe? If a mini-van or a big SUV, front seats might have option to swivel and face rear.

If a vehicle doesn't even have the option to be drivable, I would expect the interior layout to be be more activity oriented.
As for the motion sickness, that's usually more related to what you're doing while moving, like reading, or even swivelling, rather than your initial orientation.

there are so many unanswered and unproven questions with a completely driverless car. on the road between two set points, sure.
but how does it operate in situations that require the driver to directly control it? can you ask it "hey car, can you back into the driveway on the left side instead of the middle, but leave 5 feet behind it so i can load something into the back?"

^ Don't even worry about something that complex, how's it gonna park in a snowy lot with the lines obscured? Or even drive down a snowy road?
GM is also one of the last companies I'd trust to provide me with a car that has no actual controls, especially when nobody else has done it yet.

As for the motion sickness, that's usually more related to what you're doing while moving, like reading, or even swivelling, rather than your initial orientation. | I can't imagine a situation where you'd want to face any direction other than the way you're going. The only times people sit backwards or sideways in a vehicle is to accommodate more seating.

Everyone talking about facing forward like it matters? Ever sit on Skytrain, train or Bus? Not all seats face forward. The fact it even has seats shaped like that are odd. Why not have couch or limo style seating? There has to be a manual way to steer and drive for tight conditions. With Electric steering, throttle, and brakes it can all be done on the touch screen or bluetooth to your phone.
Berz out.

Berz out. | Maybe the cost and all the time it would take for safety testing?
Really who cares how the seats are positioned. It's like buying a Ferrari and complaining about the cup holders.

So what the insurance cost on one of these?
Is the car set to a Max speed of 50 km/h since that is the legal limit?
