As the title states, im currently in the process of trying to purchase a 1999-2002 Nissan Silvia S15 Spec R and i'd like to get a ball park figure of how much I need (Currently budgeting for 11500CAD landed).
I've been searching since August 2017 via a friend of mine who exports cars out of Japan and i've obviously had no luck.
im starting to think that he's either not even trying to find a car let alone bid on it since he already has my deposit or alternately there really isn't anything worth buying for that price (around 9500CAD before shipping etc).
Has anyone imported an Spec R S15 into Canada? How much did you pay? is 11500CAD to low of a ball park to pick something up?
I don't own one but I sold a 94 Supra TT RHD auto recently. I like the S15 and have kept an eye on the market. The good news is you aren't competing with USA buyers yet so they are still affordable (not USA legal until 2024).
For a clean one you are likely low on your budget at $11,500. You could probably get a clean mildly modified average mileage example for $15k to 20k including all taxes, fees etc.

I've been keeping an eye out on CL for a while, Im staying away from any "R" Titled cars, not worth the risk.
Atm, If I purchased a car for 9,500CAD, plus all fees and costs both here and in Japan, it'll run me close to 17,000CAD to have an S15 road legal and insured for a year.
problem is, I think im going to need a few more grand to find anything worthwhile at this point, they're going up in price for sure.
Only way to truly know how much they're going for is to find someone who recently purchased one and imported it.

do you have access to the auctions? if so you can see sold prices and current listings.
your budget seems way low for even a 3.5 let alone a low mileage 4. it seems like all the cool jdm cars that i was waiting to become eligible are just not really worth the cost to import. evo 7, sylvia, even itr/ctr. maybe if the yen goes down relative to CAD
this one was pretty nice and sold recently in your budget though
Every "popular" sporty JDM has risen in value year over year as they become legal in North America, particularly cars from the later half of the 1990's and early 00's. JZX100 Toyotas are slowly creeping up in price along with JZX90s especially considering some early Tourer V's are now US legal. The JZX110 is quietly on an up as well, since they're basically oversized IS300s with 1JZ-GTEs. Of course there's the usual suspects like the ITR that are already high, but then even early DC5's are slated to go up in price along with the CL7 Accord Euro R.
I'm expecting even the S14 to suddenly have price spikes as they get legal in the US given the trends for the Skyline in the last year or so. Looking forward to some of the 05+ Toyota sedans too, something like a Crown Athlete with the 2GR-FE is already peanuts since they were so popular, and no one really looks into them.
My personal budget for an S15 Spec-R is around $12,000 CAD before all the fees, I don't know if that's too little or too much yet. Would be nice to start saving for a BCNR33 or BNR34 instead before it gets legal in the US and prices increase more.
The best deals for a Canadians are on newer cars that aren't 25 yrs old yet. Once they near 25 yrs old prices rise on the top dawgs such as R33 GTR, R34 GTR and MKIV Supra.
The buying power of USA is real. Check out this 93 Supra TT 6 speed mildly modified, 123kms, $39,000 USD or $49,000 CAD! B pro just bought one for $40k at auction.

IIRC all exporters will use the same framework for allowing public access to the auction searches. Its just dependent on what they'll allow you to see, I.E, Pacific Coast Auto won't show results from certain private auction houses/private lots as theyre typically more expensive or not as stringent with their grading.

is it possible for us to get access to these private auctions then? it just feels so dry out there for me, almost 6months of checking listings and only found 2 examples i was willing to bid on
When i imported my S15, i bought it in January of 2016 and it was a feb 01 S15. So at the time no one else was importing a 01. Now it's a hot commodity and the price of S15s are up even on auction. I would budget a bit more than 12k landed. A good condition one can be 13-15 landed and taxed. Also depends on the add ons the S15 youre looking at comes with.
