How do you perform a citizens arrest?

Just curious what to do when you see someone breaking the law? In Seattle now and just saw someone breaking into cars, called the police, walked up to the guy while he was breaking into one and then followed him for a few blocks(911 operator said to stop following him). Any idea if I would of been legally able to stop him?

It's not worth risking getting injured or killed unless a person is at risk. Property can be replaced.

^ Especially in the US. Chances are it's a junkie, not worth getting stuck with a needle/knife or shot over. Even in Canada, 911 will generally warn you off from following, unless you can do it without putting yourself in harms way.

Citizen arrest laws vary from state to state. Quick google search notes each state has different rules about it, including what crimes you can "arrest" for.

Way better off calling 911 and report from a distance. Hell, cops already get scrutinized under a microscope for use of force issues, why would you want to open yourself up to lawsuits for that?

I'd stay far away. The scary thing about some places in the US, WA state included, is they have conceal and carry permits; you never know when someone is packing a gun.

Not sure how it works in the U.S, but this link breaks down how it works in Canada.

What You Need to Know About Making a Citizen's Arrest

Like others have mentioned, it's not worth putting your safety at jeopardy. People who are committing theft from autos, or auto theft, are generally carrying tools to gain access into the vehicles which can be used as weapons.

The most I would do if I was feeling generous that day, would be yelling out loud "Hey! Get away from my car!" That's all.

Biggest question I have is, "Do you have travel insurance?"

Even if you did, you would probably not be covered, because you got into a dangerous situation by choice.

Don't be a hero in another country. Unless Berz is with you. Then you could hold his jacket.

In all seriousness, just call 911 and leave it up to them. You did your part.

unless its your own personal property....do not risk it...who says a gang war isn't happening and the dude's randomly smashing a competitors car.....do you even watch the news?...some Women got blasted in the head downtown Vancouver when she was trying to break up a fight on Granville ....it's a huge fucking risk to be defending a stranger, let alone a strangers property
