Seriously, while it did have some cringey moments, this 10 episode series was practically like a 5 hour movie for me. It could have been a silly fun nostalgic trip, and that would have been fine (see my first replies to this thread). But it went so far beyond that, while maintaining the nostalgia in such a thoughtful way. It's still cheesy as hell, and that's part of its charm, but it's also clever, very well cast, well scripted, and with more than a touch of darkness that just ties it all together perfectly for me.
Shocked, not bad not bad. Love how when Johnny tells the story about Larusso actually being the real bully, we've known it for years!
Even when I watched the movie before I was 10, and a million times after that, I always thought Daniel was a dick. Especially the unprovoked shower scene... The real reason to watch was Mr Miyagi. He was my hero, and a father figure for me growing up. He's the one who centered Daniel (in the sequels as well), and while that "bully" video is done in jest, it probably makes a good point overall.

You're right, thinking back to when I was a kid it was always about Miyagi. I didn't have any of those strong I feel sorry for you and I'm cheering for you feels towards Daniel.

I could still empathize with the Daniel character, as someone who got bullied in school. But for me it was more like "This kid is different from us, let's pick on him" rather than "this kid is an asshole who's fucking with us and standing up for himself, let's kick his ass"
But overall it was all about Miyagi for me
Glad Season 2 is confirmed
I'm watching it over again with my wife, who wasn't the biggest Karate Kid fan, but enjoys good television and this is great television!
Just finishing up with S2:E10 and I have to say, this show has me by the brain.
No spoilers, but damn what a crazy ending. Season 3 was just announced last month and I look forward to seeing how Johnny figures this all out.
The S2 ending was indeed phenomenal, and I actually liked it better than the S1 ending. With S2 ending on such a complicated note, however, I don't know how the director / script writers are going to fix the mess though. Damn...
But I guess that's precisely the reason why the show is getting us so hooked.
I don't think so, as long as you understand the premise of what happened in the first movie you'll be good, they do a lot of quick flashbacks that showed what happened.
I haven't seen any of the shows right now... and I haven't seen Karate Kid since I was... like maybe not even 10 years old....
Is it mandatory do you think to watch the movie prior to watching the show? Would it improve the experience?
The premise is enough, and they show a lot of flashbacks. The characters are REALLY built up around the movie, and expanded upon a LOT.
Johnny Lawrence went from being a typical 80s high school bully villain in the movie, to one of the best TV show characters I can recall watching, in this series.
It's such a good movie though, that you really should watch it again. It just came out again in 4K HDR
News on season 3 is that the writers just started hammering out the new scripts starting last month. I was reading an interview with Johnny, and he went over how pretty much all of the characters were broken in some way at the end of season 2. No one left that episode without it taking a toll on them. Season 3 has the potential to be really good, and I'm looking forward to it coming out in 2020.
So I’m almost done Season 1 now, didn’t watch the movie and didn’t need to as you guys advised... the only thing I haven’t seen addressed in this thread is where is the best place to sign up for karate lessons now ??? I can’t be the only one that wants to do it watching this show lol
