Because the drivers of these cars are trying to save time because they probably paying by the minute and are trying to save $0.32-$0.45/minute since they don’t want to pay for a whole hour.

They're recently changed the pricing model so that you have to select "by the minute" or "hourly" packages prior to the start of your trip

In terms of driving with undue care, the FourTwo's at least actually have a warning to "adjust your driving style" if you are aceelerating too quickly or braking too hard lol
I use car2go once in a while if i know i will be drinking at dinner so I can cab back home.

But I do agreed most car2go driver have no idea what is going on. 50% of the Smart car don't even turn on the head light. Adding the CLA and such is a bad idea. The casual driver have to get used to different way the car layout and system inside the car while they are trying to beat the time and pay less.

Rest in peace to the driver and condolences to any persons affected by this incident.

With that said, I thought I was the only one who noticed the recklessness of almost every car sharing driver on the road.

From insane speeds, weaving through traffic, and the notorious no headlights or using high beams at night.. the list goes on... not sure why but it makes sense having read a few posts here that the drivers are trying to rush and save money.. which is why they speed and when they are in a rush they tend to forget to do basic things like turning headlights on or highbeams off, ect.

True... My old Accord Coupe V6 had 268 BHP and 254 lb-ft torque(peaks at a lot higher RPM, though). As long as you are not being absolutely stupid with it, it's not unwieldy.

Then again, if speeding is the issue, there is not much you can do. If someone could drive a Smart @ 140kph on Lion Gate Bridge, then anything is possible.

Let's face it, some people can't even handle that.
I'm shocked as to some of the folks I know that can't drive very well.

Theres a difference between not driving well, and speeding so recklessly that you roll your car and die. The people I know that can't drive very well err on the side of driving slower, not faster..

you don't have a sense of danger and are comfortable doing stupid shit like speeding.....in you're own head its all safe, takes one second to fuck something up easily, than mistakes happen...

i often wonder if paul walker had a ton of fun before shit when sideways for him.... Risky being a dare Devil..i've crashed a Atv side by sides and learned the hard way and now im no way in hell trusting a 3000lb piece of steel to keep me any safer at any speeds.

The thing about carshare cars is, you don't know if it's somebody who is a good, experienced driver who just wants to save money by using a carshare, or somebody who passed their road test ten years ago and now drives once every six months and barely has any road experience.

I've seen these cars driven in a deplorable way. Cutting in and out of traffic, left parked like assholes, etc. In the summer I was behind two girls in an Evo and I swear I smelled marijuana, and I pulled up alongside the driver and she smiled at me as she was puffing on a big joint. I regret not calling the police for impaired driving. And God help the person who had to get in that car after that slob.
On my commute in the morning on Grandview, I routinely see them left in the 'no stopping after 7 AM' zone holding up traffic. One week I saw a car2go left in a no stopping zone and then the next day somebody left an Evo in the SAME spot! I'd imagine it was the same guy who just didn't yet receive the bill for the ticket/tow.

I work in an office of 10 professionals and we share an office car. For less than 70k, it's full of scratches, dings, and people often leave it dangerously low on fuel. I can't imagine people who have to drive these carshare vehicles less than an hour at a time how they treat them and treat other road users.

That's a good point. You're talking about professional who share not only a car, but an office too. If these people can't manage their office car share, then how can we expect strangers to do it?

I despise car shares. In theory, it's a great system for those who can't justify their own vehicle. But in practice, it offers cars to those who lack the experience of daily driving. I cringe when I see an EVO or other carshare in the suburbs. I also give them a lot of space.

Yeah, I don't think having RWD cars in a rideshare is a good idea. I would probably draw the line at a MINI Cooper or a Fiat 500 Abarth. I may say Civic Si, but that comes in 6-speed only, so that's out of the question.

There are a lot of variables. Like mentioned, tires can be a factor. When I got my RX-8, it had some all-season tires and they are shit. They sometimes even have trouble gripping on dry ground, on a car with not very much low-end torque. Needless to say, I quickly swapped to some nice Falken Fk453 tires and those worked very well for the summer. In winter, I use proper winter tires(Nokian Hakkapeliitta R2 right now).

Add that to the fact that FR-S is quite tail-happy, it's easy to see why this combination is disastrous.

I also doubt an average carshare user would know how to correct oversteer.

Lastly, can you still disable traction control on these carshare sports cars?

Putting a face to a story.

Ubyssey - After fatal car accident, friends remember UBC student Mackey Singh as a ‘force of nature’

Quote:
Nine days after a fatal car accident (sic this car accident), friends are remembering 21-year-old science student Mackey Singh as a “force of nature” who seemed to know just about everyone and do just about everything.

“Walking down Main Mall, it was difficult to not run into at least five or six people he knew, and it would just be constant waving,” said Jonah Pawluk, VP external of UBC Photosociety (Photosoc) — a club that Singh was particularly involved in throughout his time at university.

“Despite that, he had this ability to make anyone feel like they are the only person that matters. He was really good at connecting with people and remembering those connections.”

Spoiler!

But Pawluk and Matute also stressed that Singh was more than just his approachability and “booming presence” at parties and events. They described how he was juggling around five jobs while studying for the MCAT in hope of becoming a doctor.

“He was terribly driven, he was studying hard. He wanted to become a doctor and open his own hospital. He worked all of these jobs,” said Pawluk.

“He gave 300 per cent to everything that he did — it wasn’t just about the parties.”

Spoiler!
Looks like one stupid mistake led to the loss of a great person. Didn't know the guy, but I don't think he would have driven impaired. Perhaps he was overly stressed and wanted to drive as a stress-relief, but took it too far. RIP Mackey Singh.

Not sure if I would have went the "he deserved it" route, if that's what you're wondering. I think even if that happened, it's a poor guy who made a dumb choice, which is the case right now. Even if that did happen, fact of the matter is, there's a story to every person, and this is his. Not sure how collateral damage speaks to his story or is even relevant to this. Seeing that he wanted to be a doctor, and if he killed someone, I'm sure even that's something that would be regretted for life.

Don't recognize the name among the participants, but I can't pretend that I attend every single event like I used to.

Given the description from Ubyssey, I would not at all be surprised if it was a sheer case of exhaustion. If he was juggling 5 jobs while studying MCAT, there is no way he is not exhausted.

So i drove one of the car2go's CLA today for the first time in a while..

Honestly this guy must have been fucking around pretty hard to end up the way he did, these cars are fucking terrible, i had a decent stretch of nanaimo with no traffic and tried to "step on it" the delay in acceleration and the way it picks up speed, you gotta be on the gas for quite a while to actually get going.

Honestly feel like these cars are actually pretty safe because they are so shitty, feel like my Hyudnai Elantra would be more dangerous if you were just booting around the streets

While the guy might have worked really hard while studying, I find the article a bit exaggerating. Juggling between 5 jobs? Let's just say 1 job 1 day per week, that's 5 days a week working like a full timer.

I'm not gonna sit here and say i never did something stupid, but that is purely either a stupid move or a drunk move by that young guy, under no circumstances (doesn't matter if you are stressed or not) should someone drive that fast on a street to cause a crash so severe like that, regardless of how great of a guy he is.
