So it seems motor trend is leaving the YouTube platform for good, creating their own exclusive video website for content and we now will have to pay to watch it. Video came out a few days ago, but it was still kinda bugging me so I thought I’d throw it up here for discussion.
What really pisses me off is they disabled not only comments, but also the like/dislike (where you can still say you like/dislike but won’t show the numbers). I’ve been a very long time subscriber, been watching roadkill since episode 2, and watch just about all the content they put up. If I like the content, I get that I can pay for the yearly subscription. I just can’t help but feel like they’re spitting in the face of the enthusiasts that made them.
Mighty car mods did a nice little write up about it
Only thing I've ever subscribed to was back when Chris Harris had his gofundme for "Chris Harris on Cars" since they were by far the best reviews ever made (and yes I'm including old top gear and any other TV reviews). The Grand Tour is a nice benefit of already being a Prime Member so I guess that's a car subscription but I won't count it. Motor trend I've half enjoyed when nothing else had fresh content out, it had its moments but I won't be subscribing to "paid for" content by them, I've never been a huge fan of the hosts, and for me the show was very "Murica" driven, always seemed bias to me and therefore turned me off. Although I will admit, since they added Bovingdon the show has been quite good again (head 2 head).
I'll stick to the trusting accents of Harris, Catchpole, Clarkson for my car reviews and mini docs, they haven't steered me wrong so far.

This is the same thing that everybody said when DRIVE moved off of youtube.
Longtime viewership isn't currency. The producers can't use it to go buy more projects to make content with, or pay the giant production crew that wants to be paid in cash, not likes and views.
Shows cost a ton of money to produce - the viewers don't want to pay for the production. The producers only get a small piece while youtube makes off with most of the ad rev. "Sponsors" are figuring out that they're not getting a return on their investment and they are bailing on big money hand outs.
MTOD allows the producers to cut out youtube and control their own content (no more demonetizing every video).
Farrah got burned once on DRIVE - it's no coincidence that he's wrapped up onetakes. It's no longer profitable using the youtube platform.
I don't mind it - a la carte is the way to go with this content. MTOD is cheap (really cheap if you share the login with a buddy)

Not at all surprised that MT is leaving the YouTube platform for all the reasons that the others have already stated. IMO, YouTube can be a viable and profitable platform to run on, but you have to keep production costs in check, and you have to appeal to a sufficiently large population. I'd say the way MT has been running their YouTube shows is probably too costly to be successful on YouTube.
Sucks to be a cheapa$$ enthusiasts such as myself. Going to miss the MT contents on YouTube.
When youtube first started it was just about people sharing videos. Free entertainment and something you would do to kill time. Watched MT and its been a good run, but I don't really care if they leave or stay. There are so many other stuff I can watch.
Posted a reply yesterday, it didn’t show up in here for some reason, but not bothered enough to remember what I said. Didn’t mean to come off like an entitled prick about it, it’s just a shame is all. Dirt everyday kept the charm that roadkill started with (and lost once sponsors really ramped up). Reading the MCM link above really helps prove why Marty and Moog are so awesome.
It’s also not to be forgotten that the roadkill boys (and practically everyone else in their shows) are editor in chiefs for the motor trend plethora of magazines, so not like their salary is generated by youtube ad sales.

I think the difference is (which was pointed out in the MCM article) that the shows are owned by the company (whoever owns motortrend), and the return on investments for producing those shows isn't there for the company. The hosts themselves don't have any control over that and like you said, their day jobs are being editors for the magazines. any $$ earned go towards the media company which allocates budget for these shows, not directly to the shows themselves.
MCM on the other hand is private. They do it out of their own pocket and therefore can decide if they want to get any ROI for making MCM. They've chosen to go the route of "we do this for the sake of our own fun and that's the ROI." $$ earned by sales of their merch goes directly to fund the show.
