McLaren caught going 40km/hr over the speed limit in Vancouver school zone

I'm beginning to think supercar meets should be at the police impound yards...

This car was impounded after its driver was caught doing over 70km/h in a 30 km/h school zone. (VPDTraffic / Twitter)

The ‘N’ license driver of a McLaren is without the vehicle today, after being caught for excessive speeding in a Vancouver school zone on Wednesday.

In a tweet, VPD’s traffic unit said the driver was caught doing over 40 km/h above the posted 30 km/h school zone speed limit.

As a result, the driver received a $368 fine, and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.

In BC, the posted speed limit in school zones is 30 km/h and it is applicable on school days between 8 am and 5 pm, unless the sign specifically says otherwise.

The posted speed limit in playground zones is 30 km/h from dawn to dusk, every day of the year – not just on school days.

It’s been a tough week for McLaren owners it seems.

Over the weekend, an unlicensed driver in Toronto crashed his friend’s $300,000 McLaren, resulting in what could be described as cringe-worthy photos from the incident.

because i'm an old fart i don't know how the graduated licencing works; if you're caught excessively speeding with a N plate, do you have to retest or...?

also, only a fine? no points?

320icar 04-26-2018 11:00 AM

aaaaaaaaand has an N on the back. Love it.

I wonder why the whole world hates international students

Last I remember, 3 month mandatory suspension unless you have a good reason to dispute which rarely gets accepted. Then your 2 year N license starts all over again.

70 in a 30 is excessive but why is it news? Larson Rd in North Van between Bewicke and Fell is a park with a 30kph limit and everyone does 60+ coming down. The only time I don't see everyone doing that is if it's stop/go traffic or when volunteers setup the radar speed sign in the park.

It's starting to look like we need Aussie rules. No vehicles over a certain displacement or power/weight when you have an L/N.

What do you mean lol I could easily do 70km/h in a school zone in a Smart or Corolla if I wanted to. Probably less safe in those cars than in the mclaren if anything...

Just another day in Vancouver right? :fullofwin:

because dailyhive.com

and because it's more "exciting" than a corolla getting impounded

fliptuner 04-26-2018 01:23 PM

Are you kidding? Civic, Corolla, Micra getting impounded would be hilarious news!!!! Hahaha

white rocket 04-26-2018 02:21 PM

Monetary penalties do nothing to these rich fucks. You could crush their car and they'll just go buy another. Take away their license altogether. But then ICBC loses the chance to make their money back. That doesn't even weigh in on the China or International licenses that ICBC accept to sell insurance but police have no idea to prove authenticity. I hear some are even forgeries. What a great system.

Mr.Money 04-26-2018 02:26 PM

lol @ school zone.....i guess cause it looks empty they run the whole street?.

idiots..there's a place and time to speed and that isn't one of them.

Leung_Dog 04-26-2018 02:27 PM

I think its news because if he was driving a corolla he would get a verbal warning and a ticket at most. Its because he is driving a Maclaren he gets impounded. I'm not saying it was ok for him to do that but lets be honest. Sometimes if your just driving through an area and you don't pay attention you might enter a school zone. This is getting out of hand. I think Vancouver is the only city that writes a news article every time a nice car gets a speeding ticket.

Because the local media is garbage. Real news is boring and requires time and work. Hate-mongering against certain groups (i.e. rich mainland Chinese) is much easier and, as an added bonus, they can turn around, act holier than thou, and shame whoever ends up committing the hate crimes they helped to perpetuate.

Anyways, non news item. The driver, as you said, may have missed the sign.

Also like how they used VPDTraffic Twitter as a source and still used school zone instead of playground zone (which is what they actually said in the tweet) in the title and the story.

Too many pts during GLP results in suspension

This is not true, coming from someone who got an excessive speeding ticket in a pedestrian car.

People with regular cars get impounded every fucking day. I see it on hwy 1 all the time grey corolla, white civic, 4 runner, lexus, F350, doesn't matter.

They catch you doing 40 over, your car is going on a tow truck.

I also don't understand why "news" outlets bother reporting this shit, big deal 40 over in a school zone, he could have missed the signs indicated it was a school zone. I put news outlet in quotations because lets be honest Daily shit isn't news, it's just social media fodder.

jackmeister 04-26-2018 05:49 PM

just a side note reminder,

any of those bike paths that go through residential neighbourhoods have 30km/h speed limit (with the sign usually behind some dangling leaves and branches)

So you would be O.K. with them crushing a Ferrari F40 or a mclaren f1.

donk. 04-26-2018 07:19 PM

LOL....... title should just be
McLaren ticketed.

This has nothing to do with 70k in a 30 zone.

Half the people on here have probably "accidently forgot" that they were in a school zone and hustled thru at the same speed. I don't see their own headline on a shitty website glorifying them in their prius.

Saw a pontiac vibe get impounded for going 70+ in a playground zone, so I don't think the ticket part is true that often. Well, maybe drivers should pay more attention to the road because you should never really "just enter a school zone by accident". The news part is true though.

twitchyzero 04-26-2018 11:50 PM

are Pro-D days considered school days? Spring break? The dog days of August? summer school? night school?

Nope. I did my N test on boxing day/during the holidays and I asked the examiner right before we started and he said it's "not a school day". So I went 50 through the school zones.
