Enter the signing bonus, this summer’s contract-du-jour. All across the league, big name free agents have inked deals that will see them paid almost entirely in signing bonuses, with very little actual salary being given out each season. Take Loui Eriksson for instance:
While Eriksson’s cap-hit sits at $6MM per year, he’ll make more than that in bonuses alone each of the next three seasons. There are a couple of reasons why this would benefit the player.
For one, everyone loves getting a big check rather than a weekly salary – who would turn down a piece of paper with six zeros? As any economist will tell you, money in hand is worth more than money promised to come, and just as teams in other sports are deferring payments for this reason long into the future, having money up front is actually more valuable for the player in question.
It’s in the buyout rules that the contract really holds value though, as – hinted at by the title – these contracts are basically buyout-proof. Under the current CBA, buyouts are calculated by taking two-thirds of the remaining salary owed, not including signing bonuses, and spreading it out over twice the remaining contract length. The new cap hit is determined by subtracting the savings from the average annual value of the deal which includes signing bonuses.
This means that if the Canucks were to want to buy out Eriksson after say, the third year of his new deal, they’ll only be saving $333K of cap hit in 2020-21, an insignificant portion of the $6MM number. That last season of $3MM is a bit better for the Canucks (they would save $2MM of his cap hit), but structuring it this way almost guarantees that Eriksson will collect at least $35MM of his deal – more than 97%. It’s just not worth it to buy him out any sooner than his final year.
4 more years of Eriksson still.... can his contract be bought out?
He actually has the perfect contract for Melnyk. After Jul 1st next year hes owed 9mil over 3 years at a 6mil cap hit per year.
For that cheap fuck hed be saving 3 mil off the min cap. Problem is Eriksson has a NTC next year, then a limited after it.
On the other hand if the Canucks retained 50% of it next year there would be a lot of teams interested in Eriksson at 3million as that's a good deal.
The D is the biggest issue with this team....and don't get greens excuse for juolevi not playing. He said something along the lines of sautner was suppose to play all along but there was a mix up with some BS that is said juolevi was in. Kind of weird since juolevi has only played one pre season game....
Juolevi is starting to look like a big bust at this point... other D men chosen after him are wayyyyyyyy farther ahead in development than he is.... Demko has been shelled for 8 goals on 25 shots or something ridiculous like that...
Only bright spots for me this preseason are Petersson and Goldobin... even Dahlen has been invisible and Gaudette looks like Gaunce 2.0
How is Juolevi looking like a big bust? Hes looking like he should of been a top 10 pick, not top 5. That doesnt make him a bust.
This will be his 3rd season after his draft and he will be getting nhl games at some point this year. Thats quite acceptable for a dman.Hes also just coming off of back surgery
Neither Dahlen or Gaudette were making the team this year as both need to adjust to the pro game/na game. More over Gaudettes ceiling is a 3c/2nd line winger while Dahlen is realistically a 2nd line winger if he pans out.
Demko has played like shit.. but the d in font of him is shit amd it does take goalies awhile to get going in preseason. But hes just looked lost.
Motte has looked good too.. thats hardly a bright spot though

Who are the other D you speak of? Sorry I forgot who was in OJ draft class. As I see it though the team isn't going anywhere anyway so time is on OJ side while we continue to stack up some young players.
It's going to be a longg season this year and hopefully we get lucky for the lottery

What preseason have you been watching? Goldobin and Petersson are our entire offence outside of Horvat... and if Juloevi isn’t having massive development issues why has he played only 1 out of 4 preseason games? Does that sound like development?
Sergachev and McAvoy were both taken after Juolevi. They’re not the only ones but they’re the biggest standouts off the top of my head.
i agree with 68style....the thing with our young skilled forwards is with green they have to literally play a perfect game or else they don't get minutes is the way I see it.
Petersson is going to be a stud but I do see some spots in his game that need work on. I notice he does get knocked on his ass from time to time but his skill does make up for it.
Goldy literally can have a hat trick but if he fucks up defensively he will be benched.
Jakey v you would think in pre season you would give the kid some more minutes but green is keeping him in that 12minute a night area.
Juolevi not playing lastnight kind of worries me with where he is at with his game. I mean his first pre season game was very underwhelming. To choose him in the top 5 pick was a huuuuuge mistake I mean yeah maybe a first rounder but not at 5. He just seems uninterested when I have seen him play. Doesn't look like a big point producer and doesn't really drive the play. Thank god they got Quinn hughes at least haha
Maybe he's a bust but we shall see how he does in Utica. Maybe the surgery hindered his progression. We shall se etho. I just want a shot at the other Hughes next draft

Goldobin played good the first game with Petersson. Since then Ive seen him skating like crap and throwing the puck to the other team a lot. Lots of turnovers.
I hope he makes the team because he does have good offensive skills. But the turnovers are going to get him in the doghouse and could lead to a lot of blowouts this year
Yea, McAvoy and Sergachev have leap frogged him. Sergachev was probably the right choice at the time... or a forward, but it was obvious we were going with a D in that draft.. But hes still on the path to being a top 2-3 dman, more likely a 3. Looking at the draft, the only other D from he first round who has done something is chychrun and Id take OJ over him still. Remember D are usually slower to develop.
If OJ didn't have the surgery he would of more than likely been getting to start in the NHL this year before being sent down. As he was unable to train and doesn't have the muscles/weight yet for the corners hes going to have to start in the A and go from there.
People are pissed with him because he doesn't do anything flashy. He just quietly does everything. Its kind of like how lots of people have hated Edler for many years, but Edler was still a solid 2-3 D
OJ played tonight... let Kovalchuk get past him... and on the 2 on 1 he didn’t even try to catch up to his check who scored... how can a guy who isn’t even in the league look as disinterested as Eriksson?

Maybe he's the video game nerd that everyone was talking about
