They way he explodes with speed through the neutral zone, his poise and finish. For 6'4" he made the D look like they were standing still a couple different times. When's the last time virtanen did anything like that? I'm not saying he is a bust, but it seems his speed and shot have died off, but maybe that's Green trying to dial him in as a better two way player.

Thank you for showing the last great time he broke though and produced, That was almost a year ago. Although it seemed the oilers iced a good a roster, you would think this would be the time of year someone like virtanen would be able to show a glimpse of his past self, against new, young NHL players.
I agree with his assessment, guys are coasting bigtime... I did see genuine effort from Baer and Petersson though............. the biggest coaster I've been seeing this preseason is Prince Charming... I mean I guess he gets a pass onto the roster but damn it's only his second full season here... all he's done is stand on the powerplay and rifle shots high and wide every game he's played
I'm not worried about goals. I don't think the Canucks will score a ton this year, but they won't be the worst. I'm really worried with what I have seen from the defense and goaltending this preseason. I think this will really sink the team over the long run. And as great as Quinn Hughes will be next year, he won't solve the defensive issues this team has.

But if it sinks the team enough, we may land Jack Hughes.
MDZ and Edler are UFAs after this season, Hutton and Pouliot are RFAs. Whether we let them walk or get something back for them, the Defense could drastically change next year.
Got a feeling that if we don't make the playoffs, we'll get the #1 pick, regardless. Bettman wants those ratings, sold out games, and what more hype than the host city getting the #1 pick after being basement dwellers for the past few years and two brothers playing for the Canucks again. Story writes itself!
That being said, it's gonna be a long year.... The defensemen with number 4s on their jersey are playing terrible hockey lol Nonetheless, Go Canucks!
Virtanen showed nothing with that coast to coast, he skated around shitty defence and the puck squeezed through the goalie. What happens when actual good defenders cut him off? He'll look like Mason Raymond being sandwiched in the boards and be restricted to shooting from the outside over and over.
He hasn't shown the ability to get into the middle, be adaptable in the slot, or use his teammates wisely. He doesn't have enough skills or poise. He's more like a fast Pyatt than a Bertuzzi.
But he is still young so he has time, but I'm not sure he's better off "developing" on the 4th line.

He should've hired Adam Oates instead of Instagram sensation Pavel Barber.
He should've hired Gary Roberts. He turned Stamkos into the player he is today. Not saying the Virtanen will have the same result but there's a reason top players work with Roberts.
