Looking to take a trip to DR this winter. Any suggestions on where to stay or buy flight tickets?

One of my favorite places. It depends what you're looking for and who you're going with. Looking to party? Looking for chicas? Going with a spouse? etc.

I am going with a spouse! no partying for me haha

So you'll probably be heading to Punta Cana then, rather than the North of the island.

You'll definitely have to fly through Toronto or Montreal unless you're going through the States. So be mindful of the layover, it sucks we don't have direct flights from YVR to DR.
