| B.C.'s red-light cameras now recording 24 hours a day, seven days a week
anyone got a paintball gun? https://vancouversun.com/news/local-...en-days-a-week Quote: Red-light cameras at 140 intersections across British Columbia are now recording 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Last fall, the province announced it would activate red-light cameras around the clock at 140 high-crash intersections, up from the previous six hours a day.
After upgrading camera function and data capacity, some cameras began recording 24/7 in November 2017, with additional cameras activated throughout the early part of 2018. As of last week, all camera locations have been activated.
“For too long, cameras with a proven record of curbing red-light runners and the serious crashes they cause were not operating at full capacity,” said Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General Mike Farnworth in a statement.
“Last year, we saw a record 350,000 crashes in B.C., with about 60 per cent of them happening at intersections. The full activation of these cameras is overdue and an important step for safety on some of our busiest roadways.”
Additional staff have also been hired to review incidents captured on camera and to process tickets.
According to B.C. law, a red-light infraction occurs only when a car enters the intersection after the light has turned red. The vehicle’s registered owner is responsible for the ticket — even if someone else is driving — but the owner does not receive penalty points.
The province is also looking at which intersections should have additional technology installed to catch speeders. That technology will automatically capture and ticket the fastest driver passing through an intersection on a red, yellow or green light.
Statistics show that more than half of B.C. crashes take place at intersections and that on average, more than 11,000 crashes take place at intersections where a red-light camera is installed.
Revenue generated from red-light cameras will be distributed to municipalities across the province to support policing and public safety programs. sip@postmedia.com

To be honest, I always thought these were on 100% - why wouldn't they be?
I heard on the radio this morning that you wouldn't get demerit points from these fines though - is this true? If so, not so bad. It's the demerit points that kill you I think...

I heard on the radio this morning that you wouldn't get demerit points from these fines though - is this true? If so, not so bad. It's the demerit points that kill you I think... | not sure. this is all i could find that was recent: https://vancouversun.com/news/local-...catch-speeders Quote: Fines for speeding in B.C. range from $138 to $483, depending on where the offence takes place and the vehicle’s speed. All speeding tickets add three penalty points to a driver’s record. Running a red light is a $167 fine and two penalty points to a driver’s record.
Farnworth bristled at questions on whether the speed cameras are a cash grab and a watered-down form of the unpopular photo radar program that was ended in B.C. in 2001.
“It’s not photo radar,” he said. “Red-light cameras have been partially functioning in the province for quite some time. We know that the majority of accidents, some significant accidents, happen in intersections and the red-light cameras are going to be operating at a much greater rate than they have been in the past.”
There’s no immediate idea of how many kilometres per hour above the speed limit a driver will have to be travelling to trigger the camera, said Farnworth, but the focus will be on the fastest drivers, whether they are passing through on a green, yellow or red light. |

some more stuff: You should always dispute a speeding ticket from a red light camera Speed camera tickets return through BC's red light cameras Quote: But what can you do if you get a speeding ticket from a red light camera?
In our previous warning about the dangers of photo radar, former cop Grant Gottgetreu noted these tickets were challengeable because they lacked a visual estimation. The first step in issuing a speeding ticket needs to be a cop visually confirming a person is driving too fast. Unless the government intends to station a cop at every intersection where they have red light cameras, there will not be a visual estimation by human eyes. In British Columbia, radar is not “stand alone evidence” therefore any speeding ticket coming from a red light camera is challengable in court.
“Anyone who gets a speeding ticket from a red light camera should call a lawyer and fight it,” Gottgetreu said.
We don’t yet have the details on things like the threshold or how the tickets will be distributed for these forthcoming red light speed cameras. When they start issuing tickets, BC drivers could be facing steep ticket costs. We will be following the BC government’s announcements and what that means for drivers. We’ve been defending BC drivers for decades and will not be stopping once the latest attempt at a speed camera scheme is unleashed. |

There's no demerit points for a red-light ticket or any photo-related tickets unless you admit to them that you were the one operating the vehicle... paying the fine is not an admission of driving the car. They have no other way of telling who was actually driving the vehicle and it would be unfair to assume the owner is always operating it.
On the surface, I have zero problem with this as you shouldn't run red lights. Simple. That said, I'll have to dig for it, but there were numerous articles in the past about places in the USA (I think) where red-light cameras actually increased intersection accidents because the local government shortened the amber time to increase the potential for revenues and more people were involved in accidents because of the shortened amber lol...
*edit: Here's a collection of city studies from an admittedly driver biased website, though the links are provided unadulterated (also amusing that they listed Winnipeg as being in Ontario): https://www.motorists.org/issues/red...ase-accidents/ |

Yes! now that I think about it, that's what the dude said on the radio. If they can't tell who's driving, no demerit pts.
And yes - running red lights is terrible, but every now and again I think most of us squeeze off a tight yellow.
Now just for argument sake, what are the laws about wearing a helmet while driving a vehicle?
I'm actually a little concerned my head vs rollbar = mashtatos in the event of a bad accident.
I can't find anything saying you can't wear a helmet while driving.
Thoughts?

If you weren't driving, can you dispute and tell them who was actually driving? Would they shift the ticket onto the driver instead of the owner? Then again, nobody likes a rat...
Anyone else ever high beam the car in front of you when they run a red? lol I do it just like a red light camera would. Flash them when they enter the intersection and again when they exit. People tend to slow down when they think they've been caught by a city camera.

so this is the first step for them to start doing red light speeding cameras right? although I have no issues with red light cameras being on all the time, i'd hate to think that all of them will basically be photo radar cameras.

Didn't they already "announce" that the cameras will be upgraded to be capable of capturing speed as well shortly. We're basically gonna get photo radar rammed down our throats whether we like it or not. Someone's gotta pay for those ICBC bills.

I thought there were a lot more red light cameras in Victoria than just the two on the map. They must have removed some, I swear Hillside & Blanshard used to have one.

I knew they had dummy cameras at some intersections but I didn't think the real ones only ran for part of the day. I don't really see a downside to running them full time, though I could see this: Quote:
That technology will automatically capture and ticket the fastest driver passing through an intersection on a red, yellow or green light.
| causing rear-enders when someone slams on the brakes to avoid being the fastest one through. Unless there's a minimum speed differential (ie someone going 20+ faster than traffic flow) I don't see the benefit to this. Quote:

56+ in 50 is fair game
though i'm sure they'll set it at low 60ish minimum
assuming they don't change the duration of yellow, people should just learn not to tailgate on stale greens...mindblowing, I know

They better have some big ass hard drives in those cameras if they hand out a ticket for anyone close to 60 because that's the flow of traffic almost any time of day

I thought there was one at Blanshard/Hillside as well but perhaps it is gone. It has become a popular spot for police to hide and catch distracted drivers. https://www.icbc.com/road-safety/com...t-cameras.aspx
As for the speeding threshold, I predict the NDP will choose a higher amount such as 20 or 30km/h over the limit to gain public support.
I got a photo radar ticket in Hinton, Alberta a few years ago. Huge cash cow there. https://edmontonjournal.com/news/pol...to-radar-abuse

They should not be using them as photo radar but i'm 100% supportive of them being on all the time. There are way too many people who've gotten lazy with their driving habits and are running red lights (and yes, i'm looking at you left turners who enter the intersection when you shouldn't). If you don't want a ticket, stop running red lights.

| If you did that, then the person driving would get demerit points. I'd say if it got to that point, then that person shouldn't be a friend anymore. It's also better for them to fess up and pay you back than for you to go to court to point him/her out and then they'd end up paying more (ie. demerit points).

^ You guys are really over-complicating something simple? Just pay the fine and collect the money from the driver... one would assume you know who it is and are friends / family with them if they borrowed your car.........
The ticket isn’t against anyone, there’s no demerits... Unless you tell them! Lol
