Best Coupes Available?

So my dad is in the market for a new car, and he really wants a coupe. Budget is about $35k tops. Problem is, most manufacturers have dropped 2-doors from their lineup, and focused on SUV's. Accord coupe, gone. Altima coupe, gone.
This has made car shopping pretty limited for his budget.

He just hit 70, so Civic coupe is out of the question since it's not really his style.

Infinity Q60 and BMW 2-series coupe are both $40k+ easily, especially after all dealer fees, etc.

We checked out the VW Beetle Dune, and while it was interesting, has tons of features, and pretty decent to drive, there are issues with the brakes. Not sure if anyone has any input on VW brakes and their soft feel.

Are there any other coupes I'm overlooking that should be checked out?

Is his budget of $35K to include taxes etc? Is the idea here to get a new car or pre-owned?

New. 35k including taxes, unless it's something he really really likes.

Seeing that the Civic coupe has been ruled out, is it safe to assume he is not interested in the Toyota 86/Subaru BRZ?

How about a 370z? Not the nismo edition but somewhere in the middle. Base starts at $30k I think.

The 370Z and BRZ/GT-86 should be within that budget?

LOL I can't even imagine my dad in any of these aside from maybe the Mustang. I think the coupe is dead aside from the muscle car / boy racer vehicle. Will look and see if I can find any Accord coupes on dealer lots.

TBH, there's not a lot of options for brand new coupes within that price range other than those already listed.

370Z, Miata, Toyota 86, Mustang, Camaro, Veloster, Challenger,

If he doesn't mind used, there are plentiful options.

Persuade him to test drive an American muscle car. He'll be surprised.

So he wants a brand new, not-sporty, luxury-ish coupe for under $35k all-in? I think the Accord and Altima are about the only cars that have ever existed like that. I assume because if you don't want something sporty you may as well get the convenience of 4 doors.

Is that not what the majority of coupes have always been?

OP ... this is an itch thing ... rent him a coupe for the weekend, a week at the most and he'll get it out of his system. No 70 year old I know likes the low sitting coupes.

Or, pick one that you like because in about a month's time, he'll want to get rid of it and you swoop in there and get it for the son's rate. I suggest an Audi A5, S5, or TT

I'm not sure if I agree completely. In the 90's and early 2000's there were tons of coupes that weren't muscle cars or potential rice rockets. TL Coupe, Toyota Camry Solara, even up to recently there were Focus, Forte, and Elantra coupes.

FWIW, Ford is offering employee discounts right now. Might be able to spec out a 4cyl Mustang for under $35k?

The 4cyl puts out 310hp so it should be ample enough power to keep a 70 year old smiling.

That still doesn't seem like many out of how many there were back then. The TL and Solara were semi-luxury semi-sports cars, were the other three offered as two door coupes? I thought those were 4 door sedans or hatchbacks.

Although if you consider a 2 door hatch a coupe then you've got the Toyota Yaris, VW Golf and Fiat 500. The Chevy Sonic looks like a 2 door but is actually a 4 door, maybe that's good enough for what he wants. The Fit and Fiesta used to be 2 door hatches but not anymore apparently.

I second the Accord Coupe. Had an 8th Gen and it was a beauty. If you don't mind a used one, you can get a used 9th Gen one, which is mostly trouble-free. If you like power, the 278 BHP V6 is plenty.

Miata is not a bad choice, either. I see some of them being driven by happy old people.

The Forte Koup was a 2-door coupe. I wouldn't exactly call it sporty (relative to say a Civic Si, for example).

Edit: Apparently you could get the 201 hp turbo 1.6 in the 2nd generation Forte Koups (2014-2016). I haven't driven a 2nd gen one.

If he's 70, he's going to hate that you can't open the door as much when parked in a stall.

exactly why they need a modern Toyota Soarer or Acura Legend coupe that doesn't start at like $60K+

retirees probably want a faux land yacht/grand tourer that isn't going to murder their retirement fund, yet not have to settle for a Subaru wedge with anime decals
