My girlfriend does not live with me. Occasionally she'll use my car (maybe once a month, if that).

If she drives my car next week and gets into an accident, what would happen? I don't renew until January, by the way.

Until you renew, same as the old insurance. You’re covered, claim goes on your record.

After you renew, you’re covered if you have unlisted driver protection and she drives your car 12 or fewer times per year, claim goes on her record.

An insurance related question:

My wife’s car insurance is up in December, I’m the primary driver now as she takes the bus to work and my truck stays parked at home. I’m going to insure both vehicles under my name as I’m now the primary driver for both (she never drives my truck) and her insurance is much more money than mine

With that said, do I need her there in person to insure the car under her name as owner?

thanks..went in yesterday to get my insurance adjusted... now paying less than last year.

Collision mitigation and all the safety crap in the RDX was enough to get this discount. 10%

Hondaracer 12-11-2019 08:04 AM

So ICBC changed their stance on fleet vehicles and accidents in fleet vehicles following the driver..I wonder who had the pressure to make that change because that was going to be money in the bank for them

Cabs? ICBC’s own fleet? Lol

Yeah, the registered owner needs to be there to sign off.

So I renewed my insurance. Was paying 196/mo on the RS. .595 driver factor now. Added my wife onto it as she drives my car (.545) and my new monthly rate is...... 225/mo

No accidents, no tickets, no nothing.... fucked up

Hondaracer 12-11-2019 11:37 AM

I removed virtually all insurance from my truck as I drive a company vehicle for work to and from work now. So all I have is liability on a 2000 F150, basic basic pleasure use

Changing my usage from to and from work 15KM or over, to basic pleasure use with only myself as the only driver, I only saved $28 over a year..

To me, the limitations on "pleausre use" doesn't justify the minimal savings that it gets compared to to-and-from work. In the summer months when the weather is nice, I want to take the fun car out to work as well, but then I'm only supposed to do that at most 6x a month.

So screw that... just gonna get to-and-from work insurance instead.

Yea exactly which is why you would think there would be actual savings to be had in designating a vehicle as one you drive very rarely and almost never to work.. so stupid

I feel yah. Got an 03 celica. My dad and i have excellent driving record. Paid 135. Now 145

twitchyzero 12-12-2019 06:54 PM

cock suckers...paid the $30 cancellation few days ago for annual into storage, whatever

found out my 3rd party storage charges like 65% less...so i dropped icbc few days in

on broker's screen another $30 magically disappears with no rhyme or reason when going to the final refund page...they called icbc and took 20 minutes to tell me it's a 'hold' aka hidden fee...wow gg crown corporation

i'm pretty triggered that i'll just be exporting my winter beater (it spends more time in the US stored 8 months of the year so it'll actually be legit) and pay 2% of what's worth almost nothing then only a fucking fraction of what icbc wants to bend me over with...tired of dealing with these crooks

supafamous 12-29-2019 11:47 AM

I've got 28 years of accident free driving and I'm up for renewal - any recs on shopping for 3rd party optional insurance? Was thinking BCAA but I'm a n00b when it comes to my options. Thanks.

I love ICBC. :sweetjesus:

Oshiguru 12-29-2019 04:41 PM

Looks like my rates are going up by a lot for my renewal next month.

Anyone have recent experience with family insurance or bcaa claims? As of now it looks like my optionals (3 mil, 500 collision, 300 comp, and underinsured protection) show the following:

ICBC: 2600
Family: 1700
BCAA: 2000 per online estimate (After factoring BCAA premium membership's 10% discount + renewal).

No accidents in 11 years driving. Car is insured as business use due to my job. I'm leaning more towards BCAA as I will renew my premium membership anyway and it's still a $600 savings. I've heard horror stories with private insurance from out east and as crazy as it sounds I don't mind paying the extra to go ICBC for the peace of mind. Every claim i've done has gone smoothly (dash cam video as evidence every time). Any thoughts/input?

See the post that I created and how much I saved in each category in my last post at the end of the thread.

https://www.revscene.net/forums/7166...ml#post8966559

Also keep in mind, if you are a BCAA member, you get more discount, I think you will save about 10-20%. On their website, it says up to 20% discount.

In my case, I saved $150 for being a BCAA member. It will be worth it even if you can save $120 since the BCAA plus membership is $115 a year, that means you are getting the free tows and other benefits for free.

edit: get a quote from both ICBC and BCAA while keeping the variables the same, see how much you'd save.

It depends on the vehicle. My BMW was substantially more with private than ICBC, but my Honda was cheaper with private.

You have to remember that insurance in BC through ICBC is a bit different than insurance in Alberta and in Ontario etc. In BC, it is a requirement you purchase basic insurance through ICBC, while collision, comprehensive, and 3rd party liabilities can be purchased through private insurers (i.e. Intact / Family / BCAA etc.)

I don't know what crazy stories you've heard, but if we ignore costs/premiums for a moment, the difference between ICBC and private insurers is that in BC, no matter what, ICBC is obligated to sell you insurance, whereas private insurers in Ontario for example, can easily deny you coverage, and leave you in a difficult situation should you switch to another insurance provider, or if you come along with a poor driving history (or none at all.) In BC, no matter what your situation is, they will insure you.

Private insurers are in the insurance business to become profitable, hence the chances of people hearing of 'crazy stories' (whatever that may be) are more prevalent. People are often critical of ICBC, but the fact remains they are a Crown corporation, and while their rules, practices, regulations and how they operate are questionable, the bottom line is they operate like a socialist system. They win some, and then they lose some, so everyone and their dogs and 98-year old grandmother has to go with the flow for better or worse.

I moved to Toronto almost four years ago, and getting insurance was a fucking pain in the ass because I had to spend a lot of time shopping around, finding a good broker, seeing where I could maximize my savings, and find an insurance company that had a claims centre convenient to me, and good operational hours. Some people don't give a flying fuck about certain things like a good customer service track record, convenient hours, payment options etc. so they pay the bare minimum and away they go. But when they get into accidents, it's like the world is suddenly against them and cry wolf.

bcrdukes 12-29-2019 06:39 PM

For some reason I can't edit my post, so here it goes:

Just know that with being in BC, you have the option of choosing private insurers for your collision, comprehensive, and 3rd party liability options. Seeing that you can save a good chunk of change going with either Family or BCAA, you have every right to exercise that option. Just know what you are signing up for and go through their policies with a fine-tooth comb, and compare with ICBC. If the policies meet your requirements and are comaprable, then you have the option to make a decision on who you want to purchase your insurance from. Should anything ever happen (i.e. you royally get bent over and get screwed by Family / BCAA etc.) you can default to ICBC. In Ontario, you get screwed, and it only gets worse from there.

bomberR17 12-29-2019 06:45 PM

Also in Ontario, their private insurance created a very toxic and hostile tow and repair industry with suspected collaboration with cops. If you get into an accident, you may be forced to take a first responding tow driver even if you have roadside assistance. Cops are notorious for forcing you off the road to clear traffic there. The tow driver then tows you to a shady repair shop and you'll be at the mercy of that shop. Some people have had cars stuck there for months with no recourse. Even your insurance company might be helpless in getting your car out.

Here, you can go to any certified shop and expect good service. Shops with reasonable storage and repair rates. Even the tow rates are really good compared to other provinces.

bcrdukes 12-29-2019 06:59 PM

Yes, there is that too. Tow trucks in Ontario park in strategic locations, and will do whatever it takes (including driving extremely dangerously!) to get to the scene of the accident, and tow your car to whatever shop, and you can easily be screwed, or forced to pay exorbitant fees to get your car back.

Oshiguru 12-29-2019 07:36 PM

Thanks for the insight bcrdukes and bomber. I've never had an issue with ICBC but with as big of a difference I was quoted it made me want to do some research

The horror stories I heard were similar to what the two of you commented above regarding the towing. I've also heard of the companies choosing what shop you take your car to for repairs then having the job done poorly. I will go through the two option's policies. I have a month to decide.

The reason I asked for first hand experiences is because google I find to not be very reliable. As you mentioned, some people get into an accident then when the world is against them they cry wolf. This seems to be the only time people leave reviews for insurance companies. There are few positive stories from a quick google (post-claims)

bcrdukes 12-29-2019 08:37 PM

You'll be hard-pressed to find positive reviews of any insurance company (lol!) but most you'll find are negative reviews.

If it's of any value, I use Intact Insurance for my home and cars. While not the cheapest, their claims centre is literally 10 minutes from me, and my broker took the time to explain to me their policies (something you have to be careful about in Ontario where you have to do your due diligence.) I did my rounds of shopping with other insurance companies, but none were as thorough as my broker, and Intact.

I had my doubts about going with Intact at first, but when some pizza delivery guy backed into my Corolla, Intact took care of me from A to Z. I called them, gave them the details, and went to their claims centre the next day, got me into a courtesy vehicle, and gave me options on where I could take my car for repairs. They have a recommended list of top-their repair facilities which are factory approved, and are reputable, so I didn't have to worry about dealing with shady tow trucks and repair facilities (or chop shops for that matter) but they let me pick and choose whichever shop I wanted to use. A lot of other insurance companies I shopped around with only allowed you to use their proposed list of repair facilities, and repairs aren't always guaranteed (you really have to read the fine print.) My car needed some parts replaced, and Intact used only original Toyota parts, and not aftermarket. I was impressed, and felt that the premium was worth it. I wanted to use Hagerty to insure my Porsche but there were a laundry list of restrictions (and I mean a LOT!) When I saw the savings and the annual cost, it was attractive, but it's almost as if I wasn't allowed to drive my own car, so I sprung to insure it with Intact.

A lot of people bitch and complain about ICBC, but since moving here, I miss ICBC and the ease of shopping for insurance.
