My experience with insurance so far making inquiries into Calgary has been mixed at best.

Supra Richmond w/ICBC: $2,200 a year
Supra Calgary w/Desjardins: $1,179 a year

Obviously for the Supra, it would be a big win. The caveat here is that you cannot modify your car AT ALL. No performance or suspension or even wheel changes... if I so much as put an air intake of exhaust on the Supra, I will not be able to buy any form of physical damage coverage from Desjardins and will have to look at a provider that specializes in modified car policies. This is obviously problematic.

Kia Soul in Richmond w/ICBC $1,450
Kia Soul in Calgary w/Desjardins $1,780

This one is obviously not cheaper and I have no idea why a 7 year old Kia Soul would be $600+ a year more than a brand new Supra lol

Lexus IS300's/MR2/Mustang... none of these are insurable through regular agencies because they do not consider market values for damage if you're in an accident, must go to private collector car style insurance with appraisals, as long as they're not driven regularly it's probably only $400-ish a year. Potentially better than ICBC with the Lexus twins.

*** Important note is that they have a lot of bulk discounts too, so if you get your home and car and multiple car insurance coverages from the same company, you get more and more discounts... so the prices quoted above factor in a 20% combo house coverage and also a further 10% multiple vehicle coverage discount.

Funny aside: I did not buy replacement vehicle coverage from ICBC on my Supra... it costs thousands here... but in Calgary at least from Desjardins it's about $45 a year. Yes that is not a typo.

Supras out there probably don't get driven that much whereas the Kias be out there crashing into other cars in winter months

A couple provinces and states later, IMO we've got it good at home in BC with one of the few mostly functional governments lol

My biggest problem with ICBC is actually the lack of very good physical therapists for rehab; my states guys in Seattle blew away the best sports med/concussion trained guys in Vancouver

Yah man that's an autoplan agent problem, not a ICBC problem

Your agent just doesn't want to spend time giving out quotes pro bono

The BC cons want to privatize insurance. Fun fact the provinces that have the highest insurance rates are all private.

It means you can drive it on the road, but you have no collision or damage coverage and if your car is written off you get nothing.

I don't get why private auto insurance wouldn't even allow wheels and tire changes. FFS people regularly switch between summer/AS tires with their winter wheels and tires. Obviously insurance companies have no problem with that.

But changing out the OEM wheels and tires for a set of aftermarket wheels and tires -- somehow that is a big no no.

Usually you'd keep the same width tires tho as OEM... in my case my aftermarket wheels I ordered for the Supra are wider than factory.

RE: Mods, Alberta's regulator for insurance isn't allowing rate increase so they are coming up with all sorts of underwriting rules to reduce their risk pools and payouts; being way more picky to who they sell insurance to, payouts if there are any mods, etc.

RE: Wheel size, Imagine someone's forged wheels are "stolen", drivers with aftermarket wheels being more likely to drive aggressively, all sorts of reasons they could take if they were being anal

Another take is it's probably aimed more towards pickup truck drivers. US insurers are also refusing to insure lifts >3" and tire size >34"

Not trying to be too tinfoil hat, but it seems like we are very much being pushed in a direction where we stop thinking about owning cars and the individuality they bring and slowly be forced to acclimate to group driving and pooled driving and ultimately not driving at all as cars will drive themselves and us around.

As a car enthusiast it kinda suckssssssssss. Glad we'll all be dead before it comes to fruition lol

Getting insurance in private-only provinces/states has sucked ass for car enthusiasts for years though.

I literally don't think it's even insurance, it's the way that the world is more accessible via a phone than via a car.

Instead of what's local to them, kids are now exposed to bigger social/material/cultural aspirations that are easier to fulfill in cities.

Upzoning and desntification is also inevitable because suburbs are kinda financially unsustainable; Guelph and a lot of em in Cali almost went bankrupt cuz cost of servicing infra exceeds tax revenue from low density residential in most cases.

I expect a more European relationship to car ownership in a 20 year timespan which imo is a good thing because less reliance on a car means driving standards and ability to own unreliable vintage/italian shit goes up

Just want to rant:

Our car got totaled and we were given a settlement amount. ICBC makes you return the loaner car within 3 business days but the payout arrives to you probably in 10 business days. Isn't it kind of stupid you are without a vehicle and no payout money after you return the loaner? Not to mention after you get paid you have to go look at cars... Do they think you just order another one off Amazon or something?

Just feels like they throw money at you and then kick you out

/endrant

S1000RR basically uninsurable in Ontario ... along with most other litrebikes lol

ICBC be insuring those at the same rate as a lazy cruiser out here with displacement based rates
