I’m not. Private wanted $300-$450 more than ICBC for the same coverage.

Everyone is different. Age, where you live, past tickets or accidents, what car you drive. Icbc is pretty predictable with their price but third party insurance is all over the map

I've been shopping for new vehicle replacement insurance. It's surprising how much more expensive the ICBC product is compared to a private insurance company.

If you're under ~30, you probably love ICBC's prices. Private insurance would price you properly according to your actual risk profile as opposed to having older people pay more to subsidize the risk of the 18 year olds.

The icbc replacement cost way more than the private ones. The private companies provide more options and perks in the prices. The private replacement offers a longer term vs Icbc’s 3 year only.

IF you have an aftermarket policy you might have a headache on your hands
Obviously there is many variables, when i purchased my wifes vehicle we went with the ICBC because i know the headaches
Also take note that if the person is pushing the aftermarket policy read how much they will directly make if you sign the paperwork they usually pocket $300-$550 and much less with icbc

When I was driving my Civic and younger, it was slightly cheaper with private (about $30).

However the reviews I have read about the 3rd party company all have been positive/straightforward.
People make commission no matter what. I try not to let that influence my purchase decisions. I'll buy whatever I think is best for me.

It was actually quite funny because I obtained an online quote from Belair, saw their number was higher, and didn't give anymore thoughts to it. But then a few days later, one of their agents called to follow up. When I politely told him their policy was more expensive than ICBC's by a few hundred dollars, there was this awkward moment of silence from the other end before he went back to his standard pleasantries and we ended the conversation.

I also didn't see a need to purchase a term longer than 3 years. I felt the biggest insurable risk is losing a significant amount of depreciation in the first 3 years. Everything else I thought was a money-maker for the insurer and didn't seem worth it if you are planning to keep the car over very a long term.

I've never gotten it, I debated getting it on my latest truck (2018) but I'm not sure if it's worth it. I feel that if I get it and I happen to get in a bad accident the insurance company would spend 35 grand fixing my truck if it was cheaper than replacing it. If that's the case I don't want to be driving around in a vehicle that had that much damage. I paid cash for my truck and don't owe anything so that's what swayed me against getting it.
Maybe I'm wrong and they don't pull that shit? Is there something in the underwriting that prevents it?

i bought the ICBC 3 year replacement plan on a mazda3 I wrote off at the 2.5 year mark. Car was probably worth 10k on a good day. received a cheque the day after the accident for almost 30k.
ICBC might be junk for everything else - but this was the best policy I ever bought. To be fair I don't know if the 3rd party policy would have paid out as well or as quick.
I'll reiterate my standard ICBC rant here. Let me buy a package that covers my liability, and separate packages for each of my cars. It's a complete scam that I'm forced to buy duplicate policies for myself for each car I own.

Private: 18 y/o in GTA (~6600) OR +$900 on parents insurance OR sign waiver that you won't drive parents' car, 45+ y/o in GTA (~1300)
ICBC: 18 y/o in GVA (~3400), 45+ y/o in GVA (~2200)
Vehicle costs and risk profiles similar between the two provinces. TL/Accord, and RDX/Veracruz.

Maybe I'm wrong and they don't pull that shit? Is there something in the underwriting that prevents it? | So far I feel ok. Prvate insurance comes with lots of extra fees that I hate.
There was a "referral fee" on top of the premium that amounted to almost 30% of the total cost, simply just for administration.
One advantage you might like with the ICBC coverage is the threshold for declaring a total loss is if the cost of repairs exceeds only 50% of the market value of the vehicle. The private insurance doesn't do that.

The threshold applies only on NVR+ and only applicable on the first 2 model years. It’s more than the regular Replacement cost... I believe the regular threshold is around 70-80%.
