Nissan Officially Confirms New Z Car Is Being Developed

No more rumors – the company's Senior Vice President for Global Design says he's working on the 370Z replacement.
It would be the understatement of the week to say the 370Z is getting a bit long in the tooth. The two-seater rear-wheel-drive coupe has been around for close to a decade and that makes it one of the oldest sports car money can buy. Rumors of a much-awaited direct replacement have been piling up in recent months, but without any certainties – until now.

The Australian folks over at WhichCar had an interesting chat with none other than Alfonso Albaisa. In case the name doesn’t ring a bell, he’s Senior Vice President for Global Design at Nissan. The talented man behind the stunning Infiniti Prototype 9 and the equally gorgeous Infiniti Q Inspiration Concept admitted work on a new Z car is well underway and he is directly involved in the project:

“The Z-car, oh my god. Huge pressure. You can imagine I’m completely excited that I am in the position to work on that.”

There you have it. Nissan is hard at work preparing a long overdue successor for its aging 370Z. WhichCar believes we’ll have to wait a significant amount of time to see the next Z as Nissan might decide to unveil the sports coupe in over a year from now. The idea is the Tokyo Motor Show scheduled for October 2019 could be the perfect venue to celebrate half a century of Z cars by rolling out an all-new one.

That’s all Alfonso Albaisa is willing to share for the time being, but this tasty nugget of information should be enough now that we know a new Z is actually being developed. If we were to rely on the rumor mill from Japan, Nissan is allegedly working with Mercedes, though we’d take this rumor with the proverbial pinch of salt. Apparently, the plan is to borrow a four-cylinder 2.0-liter engine from the three-pointed star and a bigger 3.0-liter V6 from Infiniti.

The beefiest Nissan Z version of them all is expected to have somewhere in the region of 400 horsepower, and there might even be a hybrid derivative further down the line. Again, we wouldn’t count much on this gossip, but we have to admit it would be interesting to see Nissan and Mercedes joining hands akin to what BMW and Toyota have done with their jointly developed Z4 and Supra models.

In the end, what matters the most is a next-generation Nissan Z is coming.

Jesus... I came in here excited thinking "shittttt this is going to be cool"

I didn't think nissan could do it. They managed to remove every great aspect of the previous Z's and... and... I don't even know.

From the manufacturer that brought you wonders like the old Leaf, Juke and Cube...

We now present another pile of puke!

Seriously, whoever design these cars at Nissan needs to have their eyes removed and given to ANY hobo. I am sure the hobos will put those eyes to much, MUCH better use.

I like the wheels and the headlights, but that's about it. The rest looks like various bits of "sporty" FWD cars from other manufacturers.

I actually like it. I hate he current Z. Not keep it at 30k, keep the 6 spd and maybe I’ll buy one in ten years on the used market. I don’t think they’ll listen to my suggestions. Ha

Could be them being legal in the US. R32 GT-Rs went from 10-15k to 30-40k, and JZX90 Toyota sedans went from 3-6k to 11-20k.

Don't know why everyone is grabbing their pitchforks over a render of something that doesn't exist. Chances are it's not going to look anything like that when it gets released in 2037.

probably just redirecting the frustration when the current line-up looks something like

I would say around the turn of the millennium, they started over-designing their North American models to look futuristic and modern...problem is they age like crap; looks (350Z, 4th gen Altima...here's one of the better one's
Spoiler!
), reliability, resale, fuel economy means I've mostly relegated them to the bottom of the barrel (some Infiniti's aside)

GT-R still works for me only because it ushered in so many modern sports car but at the end of the day, it was still penned 13 years ago and we're supposed to be okay with them resting on the laurels because the Evo and Mazda rotary died and we still haven't seen the new Supra in final form yet...no one talks about the new NSX after launch and the LF-A is too halo of a product

but yes the Z badly needs a new chapter

I read somewhere that the new z car might share a platform with a future Mercedes slk/slc. Wouldn't be a bad option since the current fm chassis is kinda heavy. Would be similar to the bmw/supra situation
