Would be awesome if it were for not having winter tires in this weather.

But yeah, you know.
Police don't care about that.

some cops are just making sure people brush the snow off their vehicle. maybe checking for bald/summer tires too.

Well, if you don't have the proper tires for the current weather. That is a danger.
I don't know if that's exactly "VI" territory, but it seems to be in line with what they want to enforce. Safe vehicles on the road.

So what I'm saying is, I would be very appreciative if that is what they are pulling cars over for.

If they made it a requirement here, they better be giving tickets to their own cruisers as well as buses lol

It needs to be a law here. Maybe exclude the GVRD if needed but the number of fuckwits up here without snow tires blows my mind.

I have posted a link in the SNOW thread, where Calgary and Halifax tried winters on the buses and found the improvement to be negligible. They weigh so much that traction won't be a problem unless the snow is deep enough for ground clearance to be a problem.

As for police cruiser, yeah I don't think there are any excuses.

Working in northern Alberta now, I totally get how winter tires are necessary in snow and not a place to save money. However, ice is another story unless you have studded or the city puts some sand or dirt over it.

Personally, I have experimented with all-weather on my RX-8 last winter. Honestly, I find Michelin CrossClimate+ to be better in rain we usually experience than the Nokian Hakkapeliitta R2. The CrossClimate feels more like an all-season rather than snows. If I live in Van/Vic, fuck it, I am just gonna park my car and call a cab, take the bus, whatever that's not driving.

I thought they actually need the snowflake symbol as well that designates that it is a winter tire for those areas, but as 320icar pointed out, which is stupid cause anyone who's gonna attempt those mountain areas with All Seasons aren't gonna get too far.

As for the cops stopping people in the snow, they were stopping people who didn't clear their cars. I saw some person in their Porsche and the only thing cleared was what was able to be clean with the wipers.

What is a Legal Winter Tire in B.C.?
A legal winter tire (on a standard passenger vehicle or a four-wheel/all-wheel vehicle) MUST have at least 3.5 mm of tread depth.

A winter tire must be labelled with either of the following:

The letters "M" and "S", the minimum legal requirement (mud + snow/all season tires)
The 3-peaked mountain/snowflake symbol (some manufacturers label with both the mountain snowflake and the M+S symbol)
You may want to freshen up on your definition of winter tire

The severe service winter tire designation looks like a peaked mountain with a snowflake in the middle. When you see a tire with the mountain snowflake pictograph on the sidewall, you know it meets specific snow traction performance requirements set by the Rubber Association of Canada.

Tires designed for use in severe winter conditions can handle both snowy, slippery roads and low temperatures. The mountain snowflake symbol indicates a winter tire meets the minimum requirements for providing traction in harsh conditions, though some tires exceed the symbol’s requirements.

You might be wondering why tires marked M+S (‘mud’ and ‘snow’), also known as all-season tires, don’t have the severe service symbol. That’s because all-season tires are safe for most conditions, but they’re not designed to give grip on ice or in sub-zero weather

All-season M+S (Mud and Snow) tires
M+S tires are a safe option if you only encounter winter conditions on a limited basis and are prepared to drive with added care and caution if winter conditions are encountered.

Mountain/snowflake tires
If you live or travel in an area where you would normally and regularly expect snow, ice and slush, we recommend using four matched winter tires that carry the mountain/snowflake symbol. Mountain/snowflake tires offer a higher level of traction in harsh winter conditions, and receive their special designation for adhering to a performance-based standard (developed by the U.S. Rubber Manufacturers Association and the Rubber Association of Canada). They are the best winter tires available.
Source: https://www.icbc.com/brochures/Pages/winter-tires.aspx

So there is actually a difference between M+S and the mountain snowflake.

Didn't know that. I thought for those chain up areas, they needed to have the snowflake symbol on it if you travel in those areas.

Studs only work on the right type or ice at the right temps, they're useless most of the time.

and in case it isn't clear not all 3MSF designated tires are made equal
the standard certifies for acceleration...not braking
so just because you have winters doesn't mean you can drive 50 in the city like it's any other rainy day or blast down the highway at 100

A read about their "updated" policy in accordance with the provincial guidelines...

"VPD formalizes police stop policy in accordance with provincial guidelines

The #VPD has formalized police stop policy in accordance with provincial guidelines that went into effect on January 15."

This link will bring you to the specifics of "unsafe" vehicles and what it entails.

The BMW M2 was pulled over and towed for excessive speed (more than 40 km/h over). Cain got him in his unmarked F150. No VI issued although Cain did look under the rear of the car. It was a customer car driven by the owner.
