Why is everyone driving in Sport mode in the city anyways? Genuinely curious as I don't know what the difference is over the other modes.
I'm so glad I got to live and participate in the Robson Street cruising days. Those days will never happen again.
Berz out.
Depends on the car. Some will open up the exhaust making it sound better, give it more power/torque, add burbles, change the throttle response, change the steering/suspension, etc.
On a tuned car you could be looking at the button doing a lot more such as switching between maps, removing top speed limiter, etc.

All my sport mode does is increase the fake induction noise coming through the speakers, make my steering hercules heavy, and hold the revs stupidly high. Definitely not comfortable to be using anywhere in the city

forcedot pretty much nailed it. For when I feel like "spirited" driving, the overall response and change in steering/suspension gives it a different feel.

In Canadian constitutional law, the doctrine of paramountcy establishes that where there is a conflict between valid provincial and federal laws, the federal law will prevail and the provincial law will be inoperative to the extent that it conflicts with the federal law. Unlike interjurisdictional immunity, which is concerned with the scope of the federal power, paramountcy deals with the way in which that power is exercised.

Spirited driving in Vancouver City?
Not to sound like an old guy but if people in minivans are driving through traffic, changing lanes and such with out any issues, I don't think you need sport mode in your Bimmer to accomplish the same task.
Sport mode on the Highway will lower center of gravity (in some cars) and allow for passing power but c'mon driving through Vancouver using your paddle shifters to down gear burbling away is asking for unwanted attention.
"Sport" is the default mode on my car and doesn't affect exhaust volume whatsoever. Its way too different from vehicle to vehicle for VPD to be saying anything about what's legal or not legal in Vancouver.
Exact same story as me, I complied because I thought it was going to end with a warning and "stay out of sport mode" but I was wrong. If I was let off with a warning I would have listened to him and not gone in sport mode anymore in the city... I had no idea it would result in a ticket of sorts, I've already filed a notice of dispute so we'll see how it goes.
It is not illegal to drive the car in sport mode. You bought the car, you can drive in whatever mode you want it to be in.
I sell Audi's, so should I start telling my customers that sport mode is illegal? Doesn't make any sense.
According to the cops handing out VI's for stock cars, yes you should be telling them its illegal and their car might be ticketed and require a vehicle inspection

It seems to depend on the mode/car since:

It sounds like more and more manufacturers are selling cars with features that aren't road legal.

Why doesn't everyone just get minivans if all cars drive the same then? I don't have a very good analogy for this, but imagine you're driving a BMW 328i versus a BMW M3. At the push of a button, your can can switch between the driving style of both vehicles. Light smooth ride for when you want comfort, and a stiffer more responsive ride when you want sporty.

Sport mode on the 1M only changes the throttle response and that's it. There is no change to the sound whatsoever. To say sport mode is illegal is such BS.

I guess VPD will have to VI and impound my dangerous Corolla iM when Sport Mode is enabled. The moment I enable Sport Mode, the Toyota ECU unleashes an additional 5HP of fury. Watch about, Main Street hipsters!

Yeah, I figured thats the case. Just stating what the officer tried using on me and the way Cain and company are enforcing things, wouldn't surprise me if they tried using that argument if you showed a letter stating it meets Transport Canada standards.
I posted a video on my YouTube channel for you all to share throughout the car communities of the Lower Mainland. Feel free to share the link with every group you know so that we may all stand together and finally make a difference. Thank you for everyone's ongoing support!!!
haha for what its worth, my default, my Corolla is in Eco mode, so its as slow as it can be. Enabling Sport mode..feel the (lack of) torque!
Any way on a more serious note, I was really hoping to bring my boxster back to Vancouver from Toronto (since i'm spending more time in Vancouver lately.) Despite it being stock, and that it is an "S" model, i fear being VI'd by VPD. I'm going to let this simmer down until the Porsche guys (or whoever is out there) will deal with the VPD on this Vi tirade.

A PUBLIC FORUM TO ADDRESS THE GROWING VEHICLE INSPECTION ISSUE... #VPD
Dear Mayor Kennedy Stewart, Chief Constable Palmer, Deputy Chief Constable Chow, Superintendent Eely, Inspector Andersen, Sergeant Roed,
Police are first and foremost respected members of our community. We trust that you to carry out your work fairly and judiciously. We salute your service so it brings us no joy to address you on this public forum.
Your silence has been deafening. It’s been over a week since we invited you to meet with us. Since then many leaders of essentially every car club in Vancouver - representing every automotive brand have reached out to us to express their interest in joining our conversation with you. In addition, over 450 people (mostly from Vancouver) have shared our original Facebook post which has reached over 70,000 people.
We endeavour to engage in a candid and productive conversation with you. Our objective remains to learn how we as law-abiding motorists and consumers of federally approved unmodified cars can avoid receiving undeserved traffic violations and unwarranted notice and orders when driving in the City of Vancouver from the Vancouver Police Department. This meeting is invaluable as it will help build trust and understanding on both sides.
“Every kind of peaceful cooperation among men is primarily based on mutual trust and only secondarily on institutions such as courts of justice and police.”
— Albert Einstein
Please understand that there are consequences to your actions. Accept that the Vancouver Police Department takes money every time an innocent motorist pays a frivolous and undeserved fine. Acknowledge that innocent motorists suffer further harm from the Vancouver Police Department as their ICBC insurance premiums increase (for all their vehicles) because of the 3 demerit points (issued for unnecessary noise violations). To impel their damages, to execute compliance on your notice and orders (especially those calling for full vehicle inspections) takes time and further inconveniences innocent motorists while costing them money. Realize that challenging frivolous tickets in court further inconvenience innocent motorists, they also waste the court’s time and ultimately cost taxpayers money. Your officers benefit as they are paid extra wages, sometimes at overtime rates to attend court.
Again we extend our request to meet with you or your representatives from the Vancouver Police Department in good faith. Please kindly meet us this coming Saturday morning at 9am on February 29th 2020 at the Hollyburn Country Club located at 950 Cross Creek Road, West Vancouver, BC V7S 2S5. Should you require transportation, one of our members will happily drive you to the club and back to a VPD station of your choice. We look forward to meeting with you soon.
*We invite leaders of Vancouver’s car clubs and the media to join us. Please kindly private message us if you wish to attend. Thank you very much.
We are all part of the vibrant community of Vancouver so we kindly ask that all those who attend be respectful of the police officers who possess the fairness to attend our meeting - let’s all be kind. We also ask that we focus on discussing the issues and refrain from voicing grievances against specific VPD officers. Thank you very much.
Please share this post with people who live and work in Vancouver.
