Last month I got VI'd for changing my muffler tips to carbon fiber and popo thought it was the OEM BMW M performance exhaust which he says is illegal from factory. I told him I did the mod myself with 4 screws so I know it's not illegal by switching out the exhaust tips to SMALLER ones which does not alter the sound/emission.

He breathalyzed me shortly after for talking back to him and ended up with a box 2 VI ticket for illegal 'cutout' mufflers anyways.

This all started with him tailgating me and I was too tired to give a shit about him so I moved over to the right lane and looked over to see why this douchebag is tailgating me in a van. Moment we made eye contact he turned on his siren.

trollface 05-10-2021 06:59 AM

Brutal. What's the fine/process you have to do for a box 2?

More details for the rest of us, please. Where were you and what type of van?

bcrdukes 05-10-2021 07:02 AM

Wow, RIP.

Box 3 is fix the car otherwise known as a fix-it ticket and go show the officer you fixed it
Box 2 is an inspection, you can continue driving but need to get it inspected
Box 1 is a tow and inspection and they take your plates

Most cops don't give Box 3 anymore, used to be popular for tint or front mount plate just meet up with them later and they cut you a break... now most of them can't be bothered to try and meet up with you so they just Box 2 you and send you packing.

I remember getting a Box 3 one time from Richmond RCMP for a burnt out headlight.
Ticket told me to get it fixed and show the officer.

I fixed it and brought my car in to the police station. Talked to the front desk lady and gave her my ticket.

She responded " Oh, we don't have an officer right now to check, but we will take your word for it", she continues to write off my ticket, and then off I went.

I went in for a VI this morning and passed for my modified collectors application. I have a feeling that “status” won’t fly with the VI crew. Pretty shitty feeling fearful to drive your god damn car.

Box 2 or VI for fun? What did the cops ding you on for the box 2 originally?

No you have to get a full vehicle inspection when you apply for modified collectors

Hey if you get VI'd, that's a clear cut case of "this was approved by a provincial body. The VPD have no idea what they're doing."

Great for evidence and news. "Local Richmond man's passion ruined by vengeful cops"

It sets a legal precedent. He qualified for modified collectors via VI, and if VPD doesn’t accept that, then why does it not count?

bcrdukes 05-11-2021 07:23 AM

I'm half-joking / half-serious but VPD > ICBC

The problem is they can just say you changed X after you got the VI passed, there isen't an itemized list of what the car has on it when you get a VI pass.

hud 91gt 05-11-2021 09:42 AM

They could say that. But if you change anything after the inspection, technically your not insured.

Unfortunately this assumption requires all shops to practice due diligence.

I have modified collectors plates on my Mustang and also passed an inspection, but it’s not entirely legal — I have no reflectors anywhere (shaved them). The guy who’s shop shall not be named is well known for just walking around your car and giving you a pass. A tubbed out Challenger with no interior and Mickey Thompson drag slicks on it was there getting a pass at the same time as my car hahaha

trollface 05-11-2021 10:21 AM

Might have to ask you where that shop is so I can avoid it....

68style 05-11-2021 10:27 AM

It shouldn’t surprise you that it’s in Surrey

No fine, I just had to get the car to an ICBC verified autoshop for VI within 30 days and have that ugly red sticker stuck to my windshield. Paid $150 for the inspection and they sent the report to "Victoria"?

I confirmed with the police station in person that nothing else needs to be done.

I learned it the hard way, but you can't renew your insurance if you haven't passed a VI. So I got my car inspected the day AFTER it expired (yes I risked it) and left it uninsured for 2.5 weeks (I work remotely and live in DT) to offset the amount of money I paid for this pointless ticket.

Knight and Kingsway heading back to Downtown, I believe it was a black Dodge caravan.

trollface 05-11-2021 06:16 PM

Blessed, thanks for the info.

twitchyzero 05-12-2021 07:52 AM

you can daily permit with a vi?

dark0821 05-13-2021 06:41 AM

i believe for only going staright to repair shop or inspection facility for the temp insurance once VI goes into effect and your existing policy expires...

correct me if im wrong, that was my understanding anyways

That was for aircare. You could get a one time 3 month conditional insurance.
If your insurance expires before getting the VI done, you will need to get the car towed to the inspection facility IIRC unless things have changed.

underscore 05-13-2021 11:42 AM

Drift guys used to used temps to get to/from the track in VI'd cars, but I'm not positive on the legality of doing so nowadays.

Going off of this

https://www.drivesmartbc.ca/equipment/notice-order-2

Quote:

If the 30 day period expired without a pass report, ICBC would flag the vehicle licence record.
<snip>
If the buyer wanted to licence it, the ICBC flag remained and no vehicle related transactions would be allowed until a pass report was issued.
So if the car has insurance till the end of the year but the 30 days pass, the car can get pulled over and the box 2 becomes a box 1.

Between that and what is written in the above link, I think it is safe to assume the answer is no, ICBC will not give day permits if you have an outstanding VI that has passed the 30 days to get the inspection done.

But that's how I read it.

No. I risked it and drove with an expired insurance since it was just 2km away from me.
