Someone needs to record when they're testing for sound levels , it's good evidence

Also: You can utilise your camera's to record their actions and behaviour. It's in our right.

So who's got it worse, or is it a crapshoot? SoCal exhaust crackdowns organized by a state police agency in a state known for pollution problems? Or Vancouver isolated to a small group of officers headed by someone with an alleged vendetta, applying a vehicle safety law in an arbitrary manner that seems to be specifically targeted?

I also saw the VI issued with the OP having cargo and the rear looking lower. Did I not mention that very early in the thread?

are you exaggerating or is this accurate. to correctly test for decibel you need to be 3 feet away from the tail pipe, then move 3 feet to the left or right (45 degree angle to the pipe) and then 3 feet off of the ground.

Exactly. Any car will measure at 95 db + if you just jam the fucking thing in the exhaust.

GabAlmighty 01-12-2019 07:55 PM

Not a 5.9 cummins. It's quieter at the exhaust than by the front fender.

I3Iizzard 01-12-2019 10:05 PM

Not exaggerating. And he asked me to Rev to 3k rpm.

coneZONE 01-12-2019 11:14 PM

I am also curious as to why he specified a Mazda OR Nissan dealer...

???

Also +1 on the one party consent rule for recording a conversation you're a part of.

Seems incorrect to stuff a decibal reader inside the pipe. Isnt the whole point of have an exhaust sound ceiling due to bystander safety. Doubt a typical bystander would have their ears inside a tailpipe. Especially if those around are all in a vehicle of their own.

Should have recorded him taking the measurement for documentation purposes since he seems to be "training" others. If he cant do a standard procedure himself, what gives him the professionalism and rights to teach others? But i guess it might be hard to record if you are the only person in the vehicle, since recording and reving at the same time may be impossible.

Sorry to hear about your experience.

I have not seen your car, so I cannot comment on its legality. However, assuming that you have not exaggerated the description above (I know you have already said there was no exaggeration), I'd strongly recommend you to do some homework regarding proper exhaust note measurement procedures. If Cain has not followed those procedures, file an official complaint based on unprofessional conduct. I think you'd have a strong case here.

I don't wanna hate. But I hating now.

I have read somewhere that the noise level is to be measured from a distance away from the car, according to the MVA.

If that's the case, might as well measure the sound level by directly attaching the device to the the engine block.

thumper 01-13-2019 09:49 AM

This is how the state ref tests in Cali:

meter is set 19 inches away from exhaust @ 45 degree angle,
engine revs @ 4200rpm,
max allowable is 95 decibels.

The owner of this WRX is doing this to fight the $1000 ticket he got. With the Nameless muffler deletes which scored at around 90 decibels, the car technically has passed under Cali rules (it's still up to the judge to decide whether the owner deserves to have the ticket canceled), but it would have failed here at our much lower 84 decibel limit if the test were done the same way.

Just for reference, below are values for a stock Jaguar F Type-R (according to Edmunds):

Sound level @ idle (dB) 45.1
@ Full throttle (dB) 84.4
@ 70 mph cruise (dB) 67.3

E30_lulz 01-13-2019 10:35 AM

Measuring exhaust noise ***must*** be done at a certain distance from the tailpipe. We had an RCMP officer show us one time years ago at a meetup in Steveston when he stopped in for coffee to see all the cars.

He said he was the RCMP's training officer for sound tests.

Yeah, sticking it in the tailpipe? He wanted you to get fucked.

Gerbs 01-13-2019 10:46 AM

84db seems like a very low limit

I pulled that value from this article:

The legal limit for exhaust noise from motorcycles is 92 decibels. That sounds about the same as a lawnmower or a chainsaw. Cars have a slightly lower noise limit at 84 decibels.

Pretty certain that’s interior noise, not exterior

Agreed, otherwise everyone would be in violation... Unless you drive an electric... :lawl:

I have a meter and my bedroom with my computer on is 47 dB lol, so yeah it's probably interior lol

Mr.Money 01-13-2019 11:55 AM

you need to be recording it on your phone imo...what evidence do you have if not...

what hes gonna say put the phone away in a public area?

twitchyzero 01-13-2019 11:59 AM

aside from recording an officer shoving a meter into the pipe, your dashcam should be able to pick up the conversation/interaction just fine

that's unless your exhaust is too loud on idle, which just proves their point, yeah?

you're legally entitled to whip out your phone and record, just know it may irritate them enough to check for more things to ticket you on

I've never got a VI and correct me if I'm wrong but if you're already pulled over for VI, aren't you screwed with the VI anyways regardless what he tries to find? If we don't start showing that we do not appreciate being harassed we need to document each and every interaction (of course, not in a rude way), but if we don't do anything, Cain and Co will continue to target innocent people and we will continue to bend over for them.

GabAlmighty 01-13-2019 03:58 PM

Well, seems like Cain is just a sadistic guy who truly enjoys bringing people down.

Like buddy mentioned at the end of the video, a VI should be a reserved for something truly unsafe... ie. you have holes in your floorboards, your suspension components have rotting cancer in them, lights are out, etc.

bcedhk 01-13-2019 04:04 PM

i'm sure there are cops who are also car enthusiast/tuners... I wonder what would happen if Cain pulls one of them over

Nothing. They protect their own...
