When I steal a car, it's theft over $5000, when the bank does it it's a "honest mistake".

Can someone help me understand the numbers. He’s suing for $35,000 but the article states they did not sell the car at auction, and the car was returned to him. Surely his plane tickets and a few days off work does not amount to almost double the worth of the entire car

Welcome to legal proceedings. You can't ask for a reasonable amount, because it's going to be "negotiated", so you go for everything you possibly can, knowing it will hopefully even out in the end.

"The statement of claim says on the same day the car was returned, RBC gave him a letter stating that it had no interest in the Subaru."

I'm sure RBC's settlement offer will be a 5$ credit if he opens an RRSP account with a 20k minimum, lol
