2019 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro or TRD Off Road?

I chose this sub-forum since the 4x4 one doesn't get much traffic. Moved if needed.

I have a 2019 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro on order but just discovered that the wait might be a while. Due to that potential wait I'm now considering just getting the TRD Off Road and getting one before Christmas/or now. Looking for some opinions.

I like the TRD Pro because it is a limited edition trim, has suspension/wheels/tires mods that I'd want anyway and the badging in and out, painted lettering front skid, shift knob, etc are all things I dig. One gripe I have is the new roof rack. It's kind of tall and douchy looking, may cause clearance issues in parking garages, and may also cause grief for rocket boxes/bike racks/etc. Other than that I really like it. The extra $8k in price comparatively will be eliminated by it's strong resale value due to its rarity so I'm not really concerned about that aspect. I have yet to see one in person though so I'm waiting for that to happen before I ultimately make a decision.

I like the TRD Off Road because it is available pretty much immediately, has all the 4x4 options I'd want, and allows me to allocate that $8K savings for Volks/tires, maybe some suspension mods, and a roof carrier option.

I feel if I just settle on the Off Road I'll regret not getting the "Type R" of 4Runner's, so to speak.

We have a road trip to Silver Star in Vernon for Christmas and the thought of not having it by then is kinda lame. However, we have a 2013 Town and Country with near new Yoko Geo's snow flake all terrains which would be perfectly capable of making the trip and even offering more room than any SUV.

Give Toyota my extra $8k, get something built as I'd want it, be patient and just wait it out OR get the Off Road way sooner and get some Volks on it and maybe a few other items?

Any advice is greatly appreciated! :)

I think you should just wait for the TRD Pro. You may regret later if you settle for Off Road.

Fafine 10-20-2018 03:11 PM

Id say wait for it, should get it around spring no?
Imagine all the people that bought a gsr thinking, eh i can make upgrades with the money saved LOL

MarkyMark 10-20-2018 03:12 PM

Well if you plan to really use it off road it would be more cost effective to get the cheaper one and throw some real Off Road shocks on it for a few grand that will outperform the Pro.

If you just like how it looks and don't need to rip it off road its probably better to just get the Pro and keep it stock with all the factory warranty.

If you can justify waiting and paying the additional premium for the TRD Pro, I would go with the Pro. The Pro will retain their value because they are so scarce in Canada. Last year I bought a Limited because I wanted all the addition features. My second choice would of been the TRD Pro version.

That being said th the Off Road is also very good and you can spend all the extra money on making it Off Road worthy.

TRD Pro in Voodoo Blue! You said it yourself, you may feel a bit of regret for "settling."

tofu1413 10-20-2018 03:50 PM

wait for the Pro.

those things command crazy resale and of course will be a more satisfying, non compromised purchase.

Suprarz666 10-20-2018 04:45 PM

trd pro if you dont plan to mod it much.

otherwise get the offroad.

I'd recommend only get the Pro if you're getting the voodoo blue, otherwise get the offroad and use the money you saved to mod it to your liking IMO

Keep in mind that there may be some added complications from lifting the Off-road since it will be equipped with KDSS, and it can be finicky to get rid of the "KDSS lean" once lifted. The TRD Pro doesn't have the KDSS, for better or for worse. I like having the KDSS on my Trail though.
Additionally, the TRD pro wheels are actually narrower (7 inch vs 7.5 inch) and have a more exposed valve stem than the stock Trail/Off-road wheels, and therefore the Off-road wheels are more functional in a lot of off-road situations.
All that said...Pro resale trumps all and they look much more aggressive out of the box. I will vote to wait as well.

was looking at the taco turd pro

thought the transmission and mileage is awful this day and age

but if the 4r has basically the same equipment, I would go off-road trim, unless you're holding onto it long term for collector status

I’d wait it out. That’s a lot of cash. Get what you really want. As an added incentive, adding aftermarket wheels does nothing to your vehicles value except drop it. 8k for that special model may help in resale. Wait for the nice one. Send pics.

Thanks everyone. That's pretty much where I'm at as well. It ticks all the boxes and I know I'd feel like I settled if I copped out and just got the Off Road. Thanks MichaelM for the tid bit on the KDSS quirks. I said I'd take white or black to better my chances.

Best case scenario is it arrives before December 21st, worst case is it shows up sometime in April/May or later even. I'm not sure if it's as easy as giving a dealer a deposit and having them factory ordering it like any other vehicle. I was offered a 2018 Pro in white back in August as my contact knew I wanted one. It was a factory order and the client passed on it so he gave me first right of refusal. I passed as I wanted the 2019 updates. That would suck waiting until August next year for it. I'll try to get some more info about limited dealer allocation and the possibility of any MSRP mark up. I've seen other dealers mark theirs up thousands. I go through a different channel so I would prefer to not get caught up it a retail battle.

That's another reason I want it. Last model year of the 5th gen.

Good call.
Even Toyota has issues with their first year models and innovations. My 2018 Tundra is a pain as it's the first year of the emergency braking/sonar cruise control. A buddy bought a 1st year of the most recent Tacoma and had serious real issues with the nav and dash electrical. By the time they get to the final year of a model, they have it pretty much perfect.

oldsnail 10-22-2018 12:13 PM

So do you want a Civic Si or Type R!

Wait it out! i waited a year for my Type R lol

white rocket 10-22-2018 07:55 PM

Bingo! Tried and true tech. Plus I'm not digging what I'm seeing with respects to concept Gen 6 4Runner's. Every time a new generation of anything comes out I start liking the previous gen more anyway so that will most likely be the case.

I would wait for the Pro. How often do you buy a brand new car? Might as well wait the couple of months, spend the extra cash, and get something you really want as opposed to settling for something just to have it now.

Good call on getting the last year of the 5th gen before the unknown happens. You don't want to get Pathfinder'd....

trd pro! have you seen the VOODOO BLUE!? Mah heart mah soul

white rocket 10-25-2018 07:44 AM

I spoke with my rep yesterday and it is a 100% guarantee that I will get one, it's just the timing that is an unknown. White is the color but I'd accept black if one popped up. Sorry blue lovers but the voodoo blue is just not my thing at all. Wish they would have brought back the Cement Grey from 2017, that color is the ultimate. Even the Cavalary Blue from last year was decent but I feel it's more of a novelty and will wear off and now I'm stuck being the funky blue 4Runner guy :lol

punkwax 10-25-2018 07:53 AM

No battle ship grey?

Haha, the blue is a nice color, but after having a blue STi, you need to be ready for the attention it brings.

I love my cement grey TRD Pro Tundra. It's a great color and such a nice truck.
I'm stuck with the factory mesh though, as my sonar didn't play nicely with the legacy 2017 "Toyota" grill :(

I got tired of the warning light on the dash, and put the mesh back on.

white rocket 10-30-2018 11:52 AM

^^Nice truck dude!! Love the color. Agreed that the Cement Grey is killer although I didn't like how they added the metallic to it and made it a generic color.

Not offered in the 2019 Pro model run; only as a generic color for other models.
