already made a post and accidentally deleted it lets try this again.
i know a few members on here showed interest, so i wanted to let people know that sign up has opened for the 2019 cars on ice season! this post will be aimed at the ice-x instead of the wheel to wheel or time attack. of course i signed up again for both weekends. my wife will also be attending in the SVT, as well as two friends and their subaru (crosstrek and outback respectively)
i'll just give a few bullet points for those interested
- no, you dont need studded tires. they have studs and rubber to ice classes
- no, you dont need awd. they have awd/2wd classes
- you can dual drive cars (one driver, two cars)
- yes it gets cold. its fucking winter in cache creek
- yes you need a snell approved helmet
- they run 2 tracks, and 4 groups. if youre not driving then youre working (helping flag, watch corners and run the event)
- there really isn't any downtime. youre always doing something and socializing with other car folks
- you run ~5 laps twice before lunch, and then twice again after lunch (reverse track)
- power means nothing. i came second, and my ass got took by a bone stock forester (he was ~8 seconds faster than me, yet 200 less HP)
- try not to get obsessed... but its very frustrating when you fuck up one corner entry and thus ruin the next 4 corners.
- yes its on a frozen lake
- no you probably wont fall in (IIRC the minimum depth in BC is 12")
it really is a fantastic introduction to motorsport. speeds are relatively low, and getting better throughout the day is very rewarding. it focuses on car control, slow in/fast out, weight transfer, left foot braking etc.
2018 was my 'dive in head first' year to motorsport. 2 weekends of ice racing, 3 track day events, and 1 rallycross. although every experience was very different, i think from pure joy its gotta go to ice racing. just so much fucking fun
i am not affiliated with the group, nor do i help run it or anything. feel free to send me a PM with any questions or post it in here and i'll answer it if i can
Yeah it's over. It's usually 1-3 ice-x a year (weekend events so two days of racing) and the same amount of time attack and wheel to wheel racing. Their website is a really good location to find info. www.carsonice.ca
One thing I suggest is if you're going, bring a spare tire or two. So many giant rocks randomly appearing on hwy 1 going north and if I didn't dodge a few, I would've probably blown 2-3 tires and an oil pan.
This is my first time going after being encouraged for 2-3 years by a work colleagues brother. I'm glad I made the trip, might bring the m3 instead of the ms3 next year
Studless, studded, awd, 2wd, it doesn’t matter folks! Come out and have a gay ol’ time. $4 pints at the local pub, and the Greek place down the street is pretty good.
So anyone interested? So far from my buddies it’s me in the RS, wife in the SVT. Friend #1 in Subaru Outback, #2 in subaru crosstrek, #3 in e-golf, and my brother might come in his Mazda 6.
I'm pretty interested but not so sure I have a suitable car/tire combo at the moment... I'm sure my IS300 would be pretty fun but would need to get some kind of snow tires for it.
Definitely need a winter rated tire (snow flake with mountain). Due to budget constraints I’ll be running my ko2 tires so I will be ‘legal’ to race, but utterly uncompetitive.
Cheap Chinese import snow tires for $89 each would do you just fine. With a RWD like is300 you’ll be sideways the whole time. Won’t win in 2wd studless as some fwd guys are fast, but you’ll definitely be smiling lol
Yah my IS300 is a manual so the stability control is totally defeatable (unlike the automatics that cut in and try to save the car constantly) and it has the limited slip diff... would be super fun to toss around if I don't sell the car in the next month I will look for some tires and sign up!
How much is registration? I’m afraid of going any further on that website in fear that I may sign up.
I went further on the site. Looks like $10 for membership (required), $60 for a single Ice-X day; $80 for the weekend. Ice Attack requires CACC or equiv license to participate in time attack.
Season Passes are as follows:
Ice-X 2 Weekends - $150 for 2 days each weekend
Ice-Attack 2 Weekends - $330 for 2 days each weekend
IceX and IceAttack 4 Weekends - $460 for 2 days of racing for all 4 weekends.
