the new Matrix look great compared to Civics
the day that a Corolla is just as fast and more fuel efficient than my piece of shit is finally here, haha
I love the new Corolla, I'd pick up the almost top model manual in the cosmic dark blue colour... but man... I just can't get myself to ever buy another new car with all the taxes and fees involved. I'm forever going to sit in someone else's bum rut.

It's not quite that expensive. The top-trim CVT XSE model is ~$35k off the lot. Still, a hella lot of money for a Corolla. I'd be interested to go for a test-drive to see how it compares with my Prius C.
It's cheaper than the iM but the hatch design makes it less practical, the weight is nearly identical, obviously the way it feels to drive is a huge factor and a 30hp difference is pretty big. I wish there was a way to avoid all the useless electronic junk (radar cruise, lane departure control, etc) and get it even cheaper though. Like 68style I just can't bring myself to buy new, the fees and depreciation are just killer. But looking at a couple year old iM and working backwards I'd expect I could find one spec'd the way I want for a very attractive price in a few years time.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a hot AWD model though.

With CVT, top trim level, pearl paint, and literally every single option maxed out (accessories, wear protection, tire protection, etc) and every tax, fee, etc added in I just hit $40k, but nobody specs a car like that or compares pricing that way. A manual set up the way I'd want it is under $29k all in.

The underpinning is completely different from the regular Corolla. Rear suspension is multilink instead of beam, and finally gave the thing an engine with more than 120HP (170HP).

Previous engine had 132/137 bhp depending on style/trim (completely gutless).
They have some neat tech in the manual transmission like anti-stall and rev-matching.
If it means anything to any of you, but the Corolla hatchback is made in Japan, not in North America. The VIN starts with J. I have the 2017 Corolla iM with the multi-link suspension, and with the Michelin Pilot Sport AS/3 tires, the fun factor is quite up there.

The 2019 Corolla hatchback, Camry, Avalon and RAV4 will have CarPlay. All of them are based on the TNGA platform, along with the C-HR and Prii. A new Corolla sedan is rumoured to appear in 2020. Another rumour is that Android Auto will be coming soon to Toyota products, but seeing the pace at which CarPlay was adopted, it wouldn’t be until 2020 and beyond.
Interestingly, the 2019 Lexus UX has the same gas powertrain as the Corolla hatch but is based on the C-HR chassis and will cost almost 10K more while having nearly the same interior dimensions as the Corolla.
I FRIGGIN LOVE ROLLA's okay!!!! i kinda miss my old green ratrolla w/ MCL plate holders. YES, MCL loves the free advertising from a green ratrolla.
It was only 250 a month tax in leased. 0 down, 0% interest, 48 months. GOD DAMN it was a smoking deal.
Unfortunately the wife insisted that i get AWD and made me get rid of it (she hated the color too). Now the vw is like 436 a month but i guess its much nicer....
I saw the one at destination toyota and it was 35k list. it was a manual.

I have read the manual trans model actually comes with an auto-rev match button. Not that I would use such a feature often, but along with the fact that manual isn't just a bottom trim option, this means some thoughts went into this. Almost feels like they are trying to change the whole beige mobile reputation for once.
And isn't it ironic that a full-blood sports car like the Supra successor doesn't come in stick shift, but a hatchback, not even a hot hatch, comes with a stick shift option with some thought put into it?
As for the CVT, I have driven a 2017 Corolla CVT, without the launch gear presumably. It's boring, yes, but if you just care about fuel efficiency, it does a pretty good job. It really just depends on your goal here.

100% correct.
All the previous gen Corollas, I feel, were built with the mindset of Toyota wanting to make an appliance that will last forever with minimal maintenance with good resale value. They didn't give a shit about "fun to drive" or "sporty" (aside from the E120 Corolla XRS and AE86). That mindset worked for a very long time...
But I think compact cars these days last a lot longer. I can't think of any non-American compact car that won't easily last 10 years. Up until the 2010s, the Corolla only had the Honda Civic to worry about. Especially with Hyundai and Kia having come such a long way in the last decade, there's more competition now.
Toyota can't just build cars with a sole focus on reliability and practicality anymore. I think they are finally realizing that they need to step up their game and add "personality" to their offerings. This is a good start.

I don't see how.
I'm looking on the website and an SE Upgrade (top trim available w/ manual) with a handful of accessories (dash cam, auto-dimming mirror, hood film, and rear spoiler) and it only comes to $26k before fees and taxes.

I don't know, got mixed feelings for the upcoming sedan. One side of me saying lazy Toyota designers are at it again, changing the front and rear with the over all body looking the same.
Other side is saying it's a decent attempt to take on the current gen Civic.
