Buying a phone from the US?

Looking to buy a phone from the states to use with my Koodo carrier. Are there different providers in the states that work better with certain carrier bands in Canada?

best bet is to buy it unlocked
make sure it supports GSM
CDMA like from Sprint or Verizon will be incompatible

only downside of doing this is some manufacturers dont honor warranties when you do this. bought my old moto off amazon, found out it was an international model, they didnt support it.
