Financial woes and successes are much more related to the global economy at work.
Human rights, social programs, and societal issues are more related to a countries government at work.
The 1st part of it only becomes more and more the case as the globalization of economics takes a stronger hold.

What’s the income threshold for GST rebate? It’s not easily googleable like everything else tax related.

PP's youtube channel uses a hidden tag used by incels. Quote:
The tag, #mgtow, is an acronym for “Men Going Their Own Way” — a mostly-online movement comprised of anti-feminists who attempt to cut women completely out of their lives. According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, the movement overlaps with more aggressive forms of “male supremacy.”

How is the crime in Vancouver and smaller cities like Nanaimo? My sister is in her 50's now and is constantly talking about the crime, and now she's sending me right wing videos about how bad it is. She never ever leaned right until now, and has even hinted about anti vax stuff although she did get the vaccine. I told her she needs to stop paying so much attention to these scary videos and do something else with her time online. I think covid and social media has broken her.
The crime was always pretty bad, and is part of why I left Canada 15 years ago. But that's home and auto crime, she's talking about random stabbings and shit. Is it significantly worse now?
Edit: Looking at the statistics, some places have gone up quite a bit, while others haven't. Nanaimo was always a shithole but it looks practically unlivable now

Nanaimo was always a shithole but it looks practically unlivable now | Naniamo is an absolute shithole crime wise. I’m not sure actual stats, but perception wise I hear more about violent incidents there than anywhere else other than Vancouver or Surrey, but they at least have exponentially larger populations to make it make a little more sense.
Crime is a function of an angry society. Inequality is probably the biggest contributor to an angry society, yet the “tough on crime” folks never want to acknowledge that.
You aren’t scaring people into being good. It’s the same concept as religion and we’ve seen how well that is keeping people caring and empathetic in the good old U S of A.
It’s all doom and gloom here and it’s only going to get worse until people are actually given a hand out of poverty and desperation instead of just talking about it like the liberals do, or saying fuck it like the cons do. Not to mention the goalposts for happiness and success are fucked now due to social media and regular media alike.

Both my wife’s company and another friends company that took up two floors of an office tower moved out of downtown in the last year due to crime and just random shit like showing up to your office tower and their being shit and needles everywhere.
Before they moved it was a frequent occurrence to have homeless people shove in past people leaving or entering the building to get up to who knows what inside. One building was at homer and pender the other closer to Howe and Robson.
When everyday there’s a story about a violent random attack and how the person is taken in and then released a few hours later, it’s not really just the media playing it up. It’s happening multiple times a day

Many of these people are long past rehabilitation. Someone with 500 documented police interactions isn’t going to suddenly start living a normal life as an associate at Home Depot.
Lol here you go, THREE DAYS AGO: https://globalnews.ca/news/9174176/v...om-attack/amp/
A random violent assault by someone following a woman into her building, luckily she was able to get away on her own and then.. Quote:
Vancouver police said they recommended that he be held in custody, however he was released by the courts with conditions and a promise to appear at an upcoming court date.

I’m all for multiple violent/sexual offenders being put away forever.
My point is, addressing the issues before violence happens is more effective. We aren’t going to become a utopia where there’s no crime in any scenario.

Yea but if we could slow down the non-stop random attacks..
There was actually another one after the one I posted there as well. Maybe some sort of deterrent would be nice?

IMO, people who commit random violent attacks on people they don't know have to be messed up in the head, but news articles reporting on these acts of violence rarely ever mention mental health issues as (potential or confirmed) reasons for the attack.
We know a lot of the homeless people in various areas of the city, but esp in DTES, suffer from mental health issues. We know we (Vancouver) are in a drug overdose crisis. We know a lot of these new street drugs are as potent as ever, and are fully capable for causing permanent brain damage. We know our court system is a combination of being way too lenient towards repeat offenders and being overwhelmed.
Connecting the dots here, things are definitely in a pretty sad state. IMO, a lot of causes need to be addressed at the federal and provincial level, but there is obviously no appetite for it at the federal level, and I can't tell whether the province is just too busy with other issues, or only willing to pay lip service for it.
In the mean time, Kennedy Stewart's "solution" is to keep spending municipal money to sweep these federal / provincial problems under the rug. |

It just keeps it from happening again shortly after.

I guess if it’s not a rape or a murder it’s nothing.
Gotta say I love how it’s all the same people who talk about how “doing -anything- is better than nothing” when it comes to US gun violence. But when it comes to the local, unprecedented, violent, random assaults it comes down to
“Well….”
You’re not going to fix mental illness or whatever the root cause of these issues are over night. So it’s too much to ask to keep violent repeat offenders off the streets? Lol. As I’ve said in the past, just cross your fingers it’s not one of your family members that gets a hammer to the head.

Nanaimos crime problems stem mainly from the drug addicted homeless. Most who are not from here. They need 30 to 40 dollars a day for drugs.
This is terrible. I wonder how much time she spend practicing this in the mirror. https://www.reddit.com/r/ndp/comment...t=share_button

Do you honestly think crime has actually gone up tho? Or do you just feed off media campaigns?
Cuz I will tell you from my experience in the past working FOR the police, the ebb and flow of things was "What's the hot topic right now for me as a politician... crime? Property crime? Murder? Car theft? Drugs?" and then the politician turns around and applies pressure on the RCMP/City Police (depending which one) and asks them to allocate more officers and monies to that particular issue so they can show a result. Rinse and repeat with another hot button issue a few months later. This is literally the entire reason Dougie Doug wants his own police force in Surrey -- it's all about control, he can't press the mounties as much as he can his own force.
So I get that visibly people might think crime is going up, there's a hell of a lot more media coverage now on multiple platforms than there ever was before, but it's just the way it's being presented. I think it's been a steady stream of the same shit and %ages if you look at the data itself for decades... if anything it may have gone down.
Keep in mind seeing more homeless people =/= higher crime... it just means there's more homeless people.

If you look at the stats skinny posted, the one that really matters, violent crime offences have gone up around 30% since 2018 to 2020. I’d be interested to see where 2021 fits into that, but that in itself is fucking massive.
