Or people just have more money than you’d think I guess.

We have a lot of friends who are young professionals, own their own home either in Vancouver and on the north shore, probably have dual incomes over 200k and these people are not going out all the time, almost all of them are in lock down mode maybe going for a lunch or dinner a night a week max

So I’m not sure what it is lol

Have a very good friend who bought a detached home in Toronto probably at or near the peak for about 2 mill. He was telling me the other day his mortgage has more than doubled and they are paying like $5400 a month now fuck

Honestly, it's all over the spectrum.

Scenario 1: Lots of families who bring in 200+ household in Vancouver. You drive reasonable cars (a Tesla and a Highlander/Pilot maybe), own a reasonable place and there's a lot of room to play even without family wealth.

Scenario 2: Then there are lots of well off families. I won't call them rich as even having a few millions in Vancouver won't qualify as rich in my books anymore. But a few millions in family wealth and parents are willing to bankroll means a 30 something couple with two kids can afford to live in a house with a <$1m mortgage and nice cars.

Scenario 3: Fuck you money from grandparent's generation. Lots of those as well. Not just Chinese kids but plenty of Caucasian, East Indian, Persian, Italians... etc etc. They fall into this camp where late 20's a 2 bed condo paid off, nice SRT8/Camaros/Porsches etc as a first job/graduation gift. The Chinese money is more on top of the mind because of high profile dumb shit that the kids do, but all ethnicities have ppl who fall into this camp, and there are way more than you think.

I unfortunately don't fall into any of those camps. If you really have to put me somewhere I'm like in between 1 and 2. We make 200k+ household but I'm dumb with my money. A M3 isn't a reasonable car and modding cars isn't a reasonable hobby. My parents don't have a cool $2m to give me but I did get some help. We still go out regularly for food, at least twice a week. We aren't spending $150 every time but it's nice to not have to cook.

There are plenty of 200k+ households that are probably dumber than me with money. Blowing it every month on booze and partying, dropping 100k on trips to Mexico or Vegas or whatever and then realize they can't even afford instant noodles half way through the month. Maybe some exaggeration but you get the gist.

I've missed a few payments here and there just because I also completely forget. I've had them write off my interest when I called. Most of them look at your record and are like "ehh honest mistake, let them be we want to keep them as a customer."

Honestly, 200K doesn't get you very far these days. That's like maybe 10-11K net per month, depending on whether one or both income earners have defined benefit pensions.

Housing costs these days can easily be 5-6K, which is like half that. Food could easily be 2-2.5K if you enjoy red meat and eating out several times a week. Add in a car payment or two, and there's not a lot of room after that.

Badhobz 01-21-2023 10:43 PM

^Bingo. If you have an average “Vancouver” mortgage of ~approximately 1 million bucks you better have at least 200k a year or else you’re just going to be running into hard times.

sonick 01-23-2023 06:30 PM

Trying to book a nice restaurant for our quarterly no-kids getaway guys night, but everything is booked up 2 weeks out already! What happened to reducing discretionary spending?

Elisa, Joe Forte's, Hy's, Gotham's, Black & Blue all either booked fully or only early/late seatings even when calling in.

JT being yelled at crossing the street. he has some balls. The cons are a bunch of crying losers. This is not going to get them more votes.

westopher 01-25-2023 05:39 PM

MG1 02-01-2023 03:53 PM

To PP.............FUCK YOU!!!!!!!!!!

Don't go around calling Vancouver Hell on Earth, you racist, Lilly white Ass, frenchman (term used loosely). Half those poor souls on the streets of Vancouver's DTES are most likely from your "perfect" province.

You want to be racist? Just talk to a pissed off asian about your kind......... FOKKER!!! Where the hell were your people during WWII? Right. It wasn't your fight. When people from the prairies and other provinces fought for our freedom, you guys were nowhere to be found. Forgot where you came from (France)? That's okay, the people from France think you quebecers are from another planet.

/rant.

JT was right. PP gets his news and ideas from YouTube, gulolol.

Hondaracer 02-01-2023 04:03 PM

Yea it’s actually a wonderland down there. Reflects amazingly on our city and province

MG1 02-01-2023 04:16 PM

Someone should take a poll to see how many of them are from here. DTES, is the dumping grounds of Canada.

Obviously not possible, but one way train ticket to wherever they came from. For the most part, we have nice weather and drugs so easy to get here. Also, safety in numbers.

Eby - non partisan, evidence based approach to the drug overdose situation. Right now people are dying left, right, and centre. Better to get something done as soon as possible. PP doesn't get it. Never have, never will, by the sounds of it.

A little history on Eby.

https://vancouversun.com/opinion/col...and-methodical

BTW, sorry for going all E-Spec over this, gulolol.

Carry on carrying on.

Hondaracer 02-01-2023 04:48 PM

So we have a safe supply with no extra resources on recovery, awesome.

I’m not a PP fan but if what he’s saying is true regarding alberta adding more recovery beds and deaths and OD’s going down, don’t know how that isn’t a strong correlation.

People speak about the “Portuguese” model. We did like 1/3 of their model, we decriminalized hard drugs with no follow up. Should turn our swimmingly.

Soon there will just be a modular housing building going up beside your home and they will still be stealing and breaking into your place, they just won’t be OD’ing while doing it

westopher 02-01-2023 05:51 PM

Sort of right, we actually don't have a safe supply, or at least not even close to substantial enough supply. We just made it legal to have drugs. If anything OD deaths end up going up because Rory McDonald who's here from Ireland on a trip doesn't have to be scared to have some coke in his pocket for a night at the Roxy. It's not making things safer for habitual drug users, it's making things less difficult for casual drug users.
I'm all for removing the stigma of drug use, and all for harm reduction, and especially for removing power from the police (especially VPD) to harass people about it, but this is half baked as fuck.
That said, PP doesn't have a plan worth a shit otherwise. He's just your typical contrarian fuck who has made a career of calling people dumb while bringing nothing to the table.
The real issue here is there is a wait for addictions counselling. If someone wants help, they should be able to get it within a day, not a few months while they go back to the DTES and get surrounded by heroin and other habitual drug users.

MG1 02-01-2023 08:52 PM

My post was about how PP runs his mouth with no idea what the issue is. It's complicated. Hell on Earth, lol. Is he a Buddhist?

Buddhist from quebec............ that's a new one. Maybe Muslim?

https://montreal.ctvnews.ca/quebec-m...ents-1.6251996

Quebec is a whole new country within a country. Separatist bastards, gulolol.

Okay, gonna stop now. lol.

^^ This.

It is one thing for us plebs to shoot our mouths off and call out the system for its failures without offering any viable solutions. But it is quite another for PP to do the same thing when he is the leader of the official opposition party.

If we are really "Hell on Earth" bcos of the OD and drug abuse crisis, what does he want to do that might actually fix it? At least Eby has a plan, and he is acting on it now.

mikemhg 02-02-2023 04:00 PM

PP is just another Ben Shapiro-esque soundboard.

The guy is a literal walking meme of a current-gen rightwing politician.

Something about him just irks me to the core, he comes off as so cynical and disingenuous, nothing likeable about the guy.

You look at a guy like Doug Ford (who I think is a total buffoon), but I can see his appeal to folks. PP on the other hand comes off as so phony and fake, he makes my skin crawl.

GLOW 02-02-2023 05:31 PM

he's like the mr know-it-all sounding version of galen weston :lol

MG1 02-02-2023 06:03 PM

Galen, the people's man............. he understands the struggles of ordinary canadians.......... give me a break. He probably never got his hands dirty. Ever.

Quick to judge, I am, but am I wrong? Maybe he does understand and is doing everything in his power to help out struggling canadians............

Guys like Jim Pattison, who grew up with basically nothing, makes it........... but he gives back. That, I respect.

westopher 02-02-2023 07:38 PM

Fuck Pattison. He gives a tiny portion back of what he's robbed off the backs of his workers, and lobbied for systems which allow him to get more than he deserves.
All billionaires are pieces of shit. You don't get to be one without taking advantage of society.

Hondaracer 02-02-2023 07:50 PM

Jimmy p, etc. they are all the same.

Think about what it takes to get to the point of being a billionaire. Jimmy has stepped on just as many toes as anyone else, he’s just an old skeleton no one wants to take a poke at

J____ 02-03-2023 01:16 AM

I dont usually care much for politics as I feel the results are the same no matter who you vote for, but I don't know I quite like PP haha. Maybe just had enough of trudeau..
