The PNE is building a brand new, state-of-the-art outdoor Amphitheatre with a capacity of approximately 10,000.
Not sure how much (if all of it?) is gov't funded.
As if parking there was not a bitch already.

So Mike Farnsworth came out with his report and a strong recommendation for Surrey ... continue with transition to Surrey Police Force with good reason. RCMP forces are chronically understaffed, stretched, this would take RCMP officers from rural needed areas to serve Surrey.

What's so crazy is that Brenda Locke was first elected to Surrey Council as part of the Safe Surrey Coalition (with Doug McCallum) in 2018, which campaigned on the promise of forming the Surrey Police Force.
That coalition won 7 out 8 councillor seats plus mayor, which to me seems like the people of Surrey gave the party a pretty clear mandate to form Surrey PD.
Now 5 years later she's gone 180 and claimed the people of surrey don't want Surrey PD?
What a joke. Good call Farnsworth.

TBH, as a Surrey resident, I don't get this zero sum mentality.
The whole idea that they wanted RCMP back was because Surrey Police didn't have enough preparation in place and would potentially lead to unsafe neighborhoods as police are understaffed.
Why not do a combination of the 2? As Surrey grows to become the most populous city in BC in 2030, having our own police force wouldn't be a bad idea. And since there was already a huge investment into starting a new Surrey police force, why not flow with it but this time, do it better? Announce something like we are keeping the RCMP (fulfilling the campaign promise), but we will ultimately phase out in 10-15years.
Start with one of the 6 communities in Surrey, Say Whalley or whatever, and have Surrey police force to start there. Concentrate the funding to Surrey Police's training and establish a model. Then work your way out. Every 2yrs or so, a new community is added to the Surrey Police. And any shortcomings or problems can be addressed prior of any expansion. And the idea is that ultimately, when the whole transition is done, Surrey Police would be properly trained, staffed, and funded.

^ that's actually a pretty good idea to gradually phase it in instead of all SPD or RCMP.
But one of the key reasons Farnsworth named was the chronic short staffing of RCMP officers and to go back to RCMP for Surrey would mean the sacrifice of some rural areas. Why doesn't the head of RCMP just say, no thanks, we don't want to come back and do Surrey, we don't have enough resources. Wouldn't that solve the stalemate?

Seems so crazy to me that Oak Bay has its own police force, for 18,000 people, and a location that has bascially no meaningful geographical separation from Victoria and Saanich (which also have their own muncipal forces) yet Surrey with 500k people is still RCMP.
